Oversee $840M budget and policy issues as an elected member of the governing borad of a diverse school district with an enrollment of 57,000 students. Elected citywide in 2008, 2012, and 2016. Served as Board Vice President in 2012 and President in 2013. Inform and represent diverse constituents, balance competing needs of stakeholders, and translate state and Federal education policy, best practices and emerging research into oversight and advocacy to achieve the best outcomes for students.

Served as Director of Communications (2013), Director of Policy and Communications (2014-16), Director of External Affairs (2016) and interim Chief Executive Officer (2016-17) for organization promoting parks advocacy and philanthropy with $3 million annual budget and 13 core paid staff; supporting a Board of 21 civic leaders and park philanthropists. Key organizational responsibilities included:• Building and deepening relationships with external partners including city agencies, elected officials, and nonprofit and for-profit organizations;• Supporting employees’ professional development and service to the organization;• Planning, overseeing and executing major annual fundraising event;• Managing fundraising and project delivery components of the Let’sPlaySF! capital campaign, with a goal of raising $10.75 million over three years;• Ensuring that the organization’s stewardship programs have maximum impact and that the Parks Alliance has the human capital and financial resources to fulfill our mission. Accomplishments as Interim Chief Executive Officer:• Improved external relationships with donors and partners and internal employee morale;• Stabilized organization’s budget outlook after an unanticipated operating deficit, while also managing key staff transition;• With support from volunteer chairs and staff, planned and executed successful and well-attended Party for the Parks in 2016;• Successfully negotiated memorandum of understanding with Recreation and Park Department to guide capital campaign and partnership.Other accomplishments (2013-16)• Overhauled comprehensive brand strategy in late 2013, including creating organization style guide and strengthening communications infrastructure.• Hired and mentored Policy Manager to further organization’s policy work. • Successfully managed major ballot measure generating up to $1 billion in dedicated revenue for the City’s parks.

Assisted families and service providers as a part-time advocate for coverage of autism treatment. In addition to direct advocacy services, I maintained company web site, Facebook and Twitter page, managed books and billing, handled press inquiries and media exposure for company founder (see company’s Advocacy page for examples of successful media placements).

Consulted with clients on communications projects including writing/editing, information design, and social media strategy, e-mail list moderation and maintaining client presence on Facebook and Twitter. Past clients include: Parents for Public Schools -SF, Philadelphia Inquirer, Aquabella Organics, UStrategy, Inc., SF Police Activities League.

Developed content promotion and content packaging strategy for startup public affairs video site. FORA.tv maintains partnerships with major think tanks and other nonprofits, such as Aspen Institute, Commonwealth Club, World Affairs Council and the Council on Foreign Relations, shooting video of their conferences, lectures and other events and streaming them online. As the part-time Editorial Director, I assigned video shoots, wrote promotional copy, and established editorial style and processes.

Completed Emerge California political leadership training program in June 2008. Emerge trains Democratic women to run for political office.

Editorial and communications activities include: content development for expanded, redesigned web site launching Fall 2007; writing editorials and policy positions for Executive Director; writing, editing and producing the organization’s tri-lingual print newsletter.

Created online presence for corporate clients at boutique Internet design and consulting firm. Researched clients’ needs and target markets, wrote plans detailing scope of work, designed sample screens and branding options, supervised designers and programmers to create final site.

Created and co-taught “Visual Journalism” course to Journalism graduate students in Fall 1996 and Fall 1997. Lectures covered various ways to tell a story with information graphics and culminated with students researching and creating their own in-depth graphics projects.

Worked with editors at News.com site to create information graphics and other art elements to illustrate daily technology news report. As Art Director for Cnet.com site, I worked with a team of artists to illustrate in-depth technology features and other content for the company’s flagship technology information portal.

Researched and developed information graphics to illustrate breaking news and feature stories at daily national newspaper. As deputy and then acting department head, I supervised a team of editors in preparing graphics to illustrate stories in the business, national, foreign and sports sections. Participated in daily page one meetings with top editors to coordinate graphics for the day’s top stories.

Generated news items on quick turnaround for global news wire service. Assignments included covering financial markets in New York and Chicago, as well as Congressional hearings and other policy news in Washington, D.C. Profiled newsmakers like activist Ralph Nader and cartoonist Jules Feiffer and wrote enterprise features on varied topics like concept cars and a nonprofit group making business loans to third-world women.
