I am the lead MAT (Medicated Assisted Treatment) counselor for our organizations state funded grant partnership with Garner Correctional Institution (Level 4 mental health prison in Newtown, CT). I work specifically with inmates (clients) who live with mental health and opioid use disorders (OUD) . These clients are utilizing opioid blocking medication (methadone, suboxone, or vivitrol) to assist with treatment. My role as a counselor is to provide clients with individual counseling, group counseling, discharge planning, and referrals. I work in conjunction with GCI addiction staff to interview prospective clients, perform biopyschosocial assessments/intakes, treatment planning, and administering tox screens. Ultimately, the goal is to help build the best foundation of recovery possible for these men as they prepare for life on the outside.

A recovery coach has lived experience dealing with and recovering from mental health issues and/or addiction & substance misuse. They have then undertaken additional training to support people struggling with these same issues. Because of this unique perspective, recovery coaches (aka: peer support specialists) can provide types of support that can not be learned through standard professional clinical training. On a day to day basis I met with clients to help them discover and navigate their person centered pathway to recovery. I shared my experience, strength, and hope with the clients to establish trust. The goal was connecting the client to any and all resources necessary to re-establish a healthy lifestyle. My role consisted of helping clients get into treatment programs, fill out forms and paperwork for basic needs (S.S.D.I., housing), job applications/resumes, and more. In this role, I also assisted with providing community outreach which involved providing professional services to people in need outside the clinic. This included helping get people into treatment, food drives, and sharing hope with a smile and conversation.
