About Ryan Beesley

I've been a software engineering professional since 2001, beginning my programming journey in the 7th grade with college classes in Basic and Pascal. I interned with the Windows Shell team and joined Office Shared Services directly after earning my Electrical Engineering Technology degree from Texas A&M. Since 2002, I've been testing Internet technologies, starting with SharePoint Portal Server 2003, and developing websites and web services for several years. At Microsoft, I worked on Localization for Team Xbox and Windows 10. At Zillow, as their first hired tester, I spent three years working with Microsoft SQL Server and Java technologies, building up the test team and supporting Operations and Development. At Swype, I was again their first hired tester, managing and coordinating SDETs, and architecting a tool to evaluate the Swype algorithm's accuracy, driven by a focus on accessibility and HCI.As a Senior Consultant, I have experience across Test, Developer, and PM disciplines, working with multiple operating systems, from mobile devices to back-end SOA servers. My passion for mobile devices and HCI is extensive, with deep experience in Android tablets, phones, and XR or Spatial Computing supporting Virtual Reality, Mixed Reality, and Augmented Reality. As the Director of Quality Assurance at Geneia, I led teams to success, bringing products to fruition. Most recently, as an XR QA Manager at Unity, I led a team of XR QA engineers, ensuring the quality of various XR devices and hardware under NDA. I established and maintained quality-focused relationships with key XR partners like Sony, Microsoft, Magic Leap, Meta, and Google, owning and executing the XR Automation strategy.Specialties: C, C#, Go, Java, Jython, Python, Powershell, BASH (awk, grep, sed), XML, XSLT, HTTP, CSS, Javascript, Typescript, Windows, Linux, SQL Server, SSIS, MySQL.

Ryan Beesley Work Experience Details
  • Unity
    Xr Qa Manager
    Unity Feb 2022 - Mar 2024
    Greater Seattle Area
I led a dynamic team of up to 9 XR QA engineers of different seniority levels, ensuring the quality of various XR devices and hardware, some of which were confidential and under NDA. I established and maintained quality-focused relationships with key XR partners such as Sony, Microsoft, and Magic Leap, as well as other XR stakeholders like Meta and Google. I owned and executed the XR Automation strategy, increasing the scope of proprietary and OpenXR testing and conducting statistical analysis of test results to detect and prevent performance and functional issues.
  • Vizio
    Senior Mobile Automation Engineer I
    Vizio Dec 2021 - Feb 2022
    Seattle, Washington, United States
I helped the SmartCast mobile group strategize to automate builds of SmartCast for Android and iOS against the lineup of TVs and Sound Bars. The multidimensional matrix of mobile devices, screen geometries, device endpoints, and variations of the firmware on those endpoints made this challenging when additionally constrained with infrastructure requirements to connect these different devices.
  • Singularity Partners
    Consultant
    Singularity Partners Apr 2021 - Jul 2021
    Greater Seattle Area
  • Geneia
Interim Director Of Quality Assurance, Consultant With Singularity Partners
    Geneia Apr 2021 - Jul 2021
    Remote
I was brought in to assist Geneia in managing the Quality Assurance team and to outline future work. The team consisted of contract and full-time employees spread between several time zones, including international workers. I migrated the Test Case Management system they were using from Service-Now to Xblend's (now Idera's) Xray to integrate tightly with the Development team's recent transition to Jira. This required writing the utility to transform the 10,000 Service-Now Test Cases with an average of 5 Test Steps each, to preserve formatting and as much content as possible, and import them into Xray. 99.99% of them were transferred without loss, leaving only a handful which needed to be manually reimplemented. The rest of the time I worked closely with the Director of Software Engineering to off-load his work in managing the team. Working with team members I would guide them on how to be more productive and to help them utilize the Scrum agile framework the company had recently switched to using. Meeting with them regularly I helped set expectations and coordinate cross-team efforts to set Big Rock objectives for the next quarter and beyond.

Moved to the Office group to build the Windows Get Help app. In my short time I contributed to the planning and future design of the application, as well as some work on the telemetry data to ensure the application adhered to Next Generation Privacy policies and practices.
  • Microsoft
    Software Engineer Ii
    Microsoft Mar 2017 - Jul 2019
    Redmond, Wa
Under DLUX, I joined the team building the Language Community app. Aside from the UWP store app, the team was also responsible for building the Language Community tab in the Feedback Hub. Both of these public tools allowed global users to submit translation bugs or suggestions for Windows applications, which added them to the translation pipeline for inclusion in future OS or application releases. My responsibilities spanned PowerBI reports, Build and Release for the Language Community app and promotion through flight rings through the Microsoft Store, managing external and internal campaigns to promote these applications to appropriate markets, and development work on both applications fixing bugs and implementing new features. Nearly all responsibilities required cross-team collaboration outside DLUX.

  • Agilysys
Build Engineer, Consultant With Intersource, Llc.
    Agilysys Mar 2014 - Jul 2014
    Bellevue, Wa
I took ownership of a build system that was severely crippled and was constantly failing. My first responsibility was to stabilize the existing infrastructure, until Agilysys could reach their first milestone, upgrading Gerrit, Jenkins, and Artifactory Pro servers, and writing custom scripts to monitor server health. I was able to do this with almost no downtime to developers and with the exception of one scheduled maintenance window, these updates caused no disruptions. The maintenance window was scheduled outside of business hours and full services were restored after a few hours. After stabilizing the existing build system, I rebuilt all of the servers and unified all components using Atlassian products, replacing Gerrit with Stash and Jenkins with Bamboo. The company was already using Jira, Confluence, and HipChat, so this change was intended to make future maintenance and management easier. This transition took place over a couple of Sprints and was structured to minimize the impact to development teams. In addition, I helped write and maintain Ansible scripts to configure and deploy all of the various services to our test, staging, and production environments. These scripts would provision the hosts from baseline images and configure each server for the role they would play in that environment. I also worked on Vagrant images to create a local Dev environment which closely matched the operations environments. When I was brought on board, the build system only produced "Release" artifacts. I wrote a Python tool to help clean up old Artifactory artifacts that didn't follow Semantic Versioning (http://semver.org/) or Maven versioning best practices.
  • Intersource Llc
    Consultant
    Intersource Llc Apr 2013 - Jul 2014
    Bellevue, Wa
As a consultant, I worked with a number of clients, notably Comcast and Agilysys as my two most significant contracts. Depending on the project and the stage of the project I served in SDE, PM, QA, and Build roles. I really enjoyed my time at Intersource, and if not for the unexpected passing of our owner, I expect I would still be working with the company today.Between consulting projects, I spent bench time learning new technologies and building in-house projects. One of these projects was an Android checklist application. I completely designed the client side of the project, from UX design to writing the application. The client interfaced with Taskwarrior (http://taskwarrior.org/), upon which we added a SOA interface. I also began the construction of an Android based Information Radiator. While intended to be agnostic to the information source, most of this work was spent reverse engineering the JIRA Agile web services. Both projects were superseded by client work and were not completed as marketable products before Intersource, LLC. closed its doors.
  • Wonderware Pacwest
Sr. Project Manager, Consultant With Intersource, Llc.
    Wonderware Pacwest Nov 2013 - Jan 2014
    Bellevue, Wa
Managed the conversion of a Drupal based version of their website into a WordPress version of their website with additional features. When this project was given to me, the client was behind schedule and at risk for missing their delivery.I was responsible for finding the talent to tackle this project. I set and maintained the schedule to complete the project before the reveal at a January conference. I brokered communication between the client and the developer we hired, to manage expectations and to review progress. The project was completed in time for the conference.
  • Comcast
Sr. Software Development Engineer, Consultant With Intersource, Llc.
    Comcast May 2013 - Oct 2013
    Bellevue, Wa
Our team built a Java based, language agnostic SOA rules engine. Leveraging JSR-223 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scripting_for_the_Java_Platform) capabilities of Java, we constructed a service that could query external systems and execute different scripts based on these conditions. Comcast could use this engine as the glue between numerous services and build intelligent rules to replace legacy systems.I was responsible for the JSR-223 integration, maintained the Maven models and build systems, assisted with the database schema and maintained the build integration, wrote the example JavaScript rules, and converted one of Comcast's existing XSLT based processes into a JavaScript rule as a proof of concept. I wrote several additional rules that could be used by test to examine performance bottlenecks and recursion, and tracked down the source of memory leaks.
  • Dendreon
Sr. Software Development, Consultant With Maxsam Partners And Atum Innovations

  • Swype Inc.
    Sr. Mobile Qa Engineer
    Swype Inc. Jul 2009 - Mar 2011
    Seattle, Wa
I was Swype's first tester and QA manager. I joined Swype before we launched on our first device, the Samsung Omnia II, and in my very first day helped track down memory leaks while running Swype on Windows Mobile 6.5.For the next 2 years, I helped build a team of dedicated testers and established practices for ensuring a high software quality level as we scaled our operations to release Swype on Symbian S60, Android, and other platforms that I cannot disclose publicly; across hundreds of devices and across carriers world-wide.I was the architect and project manager of an internal testing tool, written in C and C#, that allowed us to test the Swype algorithm as if it were running on different OS platforms and 60+ languages. The system I designed allowed us to generate real and simulated user Swype traces, and to evaluate the accuracy of our algorithm. The architecture of the tool allowed us to take advantage of distributed and mesh computing to reduce a multi-day test pass into one that might take hours or minutes. This tool single handedly allowed us to identify a check-in that reduced our accuracy from 95% to 90%, and to revert to an earlier version of a routine. The defect in this case had passed all code reviews and did not have any expected side effects, but using the test tool we were able to find and resolve the defect in a day.

    Seattle, Wa
Zillow's first full-time tester. I helped our Director of Test build the test team and have been involved with all but the most recent interviews and subsequent hires. Early in the company, I had to work across every component and feature of the website. When we started hiring more testers, I was able to focus most of my testing efforts at the platform and backend services and less on UI. Later, I worked in the Data Import part of our site, making sure that the data we get from our data providers meets a certain quality bar and helping test systems we will use to make that process ever more efficient. Most recently I worked on our latest product, Zillow Mortgage Marketplace. Zillow Mortgage Marketplace is unique in that it allows people to anonymously request loans and fosters a transparent market. It features complex interaction between user states and consists of a sophisticated matching system. Recent additions included AJAX support for charts and a new API interface.
