Born in Memphis, Tennessee, Ryan got his baseball start after a move to South Carolina where he attended Hilton Head High School. He picked the game up quickly showing impressive command and scouts took notice. His combination of pitch velocity, natural instincts on opposing batters and ability to lead landed him a spot with the Pittsburgh Pirates when they picked him up in the 26th round of the 2006 MLB First-Year Player Draft.Following four positive seasons of advancements within the Pirate’s system, the Oakland Athletics acquired Ryan in December of 2010 before being moved over to the Texas Rangers in January 2011. While with the Rangers, he put together an exceptional year of pitching at Class-A Advanced. Following the 2011 season, the Rangers selected him to attend their Arizona Fall League. In December 2011, the San Diego Padres acquired him and he has since completed his second season with the team. At the start of the 2012 season, Ryan started out with the Double A San Antonio Missions and after not surrendering a hit or walk in his first two appearances the Padres moved him up to pitch for the Triple A Tucson Padres. For the 2013 championship season, he started off with the San Antonio again and around mid-season the Padres moved him back up to Triple A before being moved back to San Antonio to help clinch the Texas League Championship title. While pitching in Tucson, he had a 3.60 ERA and held opposing batters to just .266 BAA. He was also able to rack up 18 strikeouts in just 20 innings pitched. Ryan has great pitches in his rotation including a high velocity fast ball, a curve ball and a hard to hit cutter. His fastball has been clocked in games at 95-96 mph. Some of Ryan’s intangibles come in the form of his attitude. He’s a hard worker, leader in the clubhouse and he’s got a great positive outlook on and off the field.
