The Goldman Environmental Prize honors the achievements and leadership of grassroots environmental activists from around the world. Goldman Prize recipients focus on protecting endangered ecosystems and species, combating destructive development projects, promoting sustainability, influencing environmental policies, and striving for environmental justice. This work has taken me from inside the Oval Office and the halls of Congress, to remote villages in Africa, and Latin America. In my time with the Goldman Prize, I:★ Conducted extensive background research on a wide-range of environmental, human rights and sustainability issues for Goldman Environmental Prize nominees from Latin America, North America and Africa.★ Coordinated strategic, high-level meetings with government agencies, Congress, funders and NGOs.★ Built new relationships with external partners to increase with an emphasis on regionally basedorganizations and individual sustainability experts.★ Provided simultaneous Spanish-English interpretation for Goldman Environmental Prize Winners during high-level meetings at Congress and the White House, at public events and with documentary film crew.★ Authored a strategic plan for a new initiative to protect environmental human rights defenders.

As part of PG&E’s green communities team, I served as a sustainability advisor both internally for the company, as well as for local government agencies and regional non-profits. In my work, I:★ Provided technical assistance to San Mateo County and 20 cities on climate planning and energy efficiency.★ Served as an internal expert on LEED, greenhouse gas emissions, sustainability and climate change.★ Organized 5 Silicon Valley cities to participate in a campaign with the Bay Area Climate Collaborative making residential energy efficiency and solar installations more affordable for residents.★ Partnered with 4 high schools and the Alliance for Climate Education to create an energy efficiency retrofit and climate change educational program.★ Collaborated with city and county officials to promote the Energy Upgrade California program in San Mateo County, resulting in 200+ home retrofits.

Silicon Valley, Ca

Ecology Action’s mission is to provide innovative energy, water, and transportation solutions to communities across California to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, at scale. The organization’s focus is on the most pressing issue for a thriving future: reducing carbon emissions. Programs focus on carbon reduction solutions for the sectors that have the most significant opportunity for high GHG emitting sectors: transportation, water conservation and energy efficiency. In my time with Ecology Action, I: ★ Conducted on-site energy efficiency analysis of lighting and refrigeration systems for small businesses.★ Facilitated over 3 million-kilowatt hours of energy savings through retrofits of Silicon Valley businesses.★ Met with customers to present retrofit opportunities, energy savings, and return on investment.★ Managed energy efficiency projects from audit to installation and performed quality assurance inspections.★ Provided customer assistance for contractors and liaised with local utility agencies.

San Francisco, Ca

The University of San Francisco’s recycling program was born out of a grassroots, student-led movement to increase recycling and divert waste from landfills. As the university’s recycling manager I: ★ Initiated the university’s first residence-based composting program. Expanded the program to more than half of the university’s residence halls and dining areas.★ Coordinated outreach and educational activities for students and faculty for recycling and composting.★ Supervised the collection of recycling and compost across campus. Managed a work team of 10 recyclers.★ Directed USF’s electronics recycling program; ensured that the university contracted with recyclers certified by the Basel Action Network.★ Collaborated with SF Department of the Environment, Recology and local businesses to expand and improve recycling services at USF.

Providence, Rhode Island Area

Clean Air-Cool Planet (CA-CP) is a science-based, non-partisan, non-profit organization finding and promoting solutions to climate change. CA-CP works with companies, universities, communities and science centers to reduce their carbon emissions - helping partners, their constituents, and other opinion leaders and stakeholders understand climate change’s impacts and the best available solutions. As a Community Climate Change Fellow I:★ Advised the Providence City Government on climate change policy.★ Synthesized data for municipal greenhouse gas inventory.★ Liaised between city government, businesses and the non-profit community.★ Established a collaborative project with Brown University, local NGOs and the City of Providence.

Santo Domingo, Peru

As a Peace Corps volunteer in northern Peru, I worked with local citizens and advised the municipal government on the development of a solid waste management system for the town. At the time, there were only two existing systems in the country and most communities burned their trash in open fires, often on the banks of local rivers, further contaminating the environment. Working with local residents, I:★ Designed and implemented a solid waste management program. Facilitated the establishment of a solid waste treatment center including composting, recycling and a sanitary landfill.★ Authored an environmental grant proposal (in Spanish), receiving both international and local funding.★ Launched an environmental education campaign to protect the local watershed, including door-to-door visits, community workshops and the production and distribution of informational materials in Spanish.★ Within one year, the program had grown from a pilot in one neighborhood to half the town, with a 95% participation rate of local residents.

Mendocino County, California

The Alliance for Rural Community Health's (ARCH) purpose is to develop and expand collaborative ways of addressing community health care issues in a cost-effective and efficient manner. The Community HealthCorps of Northern California is a partnership between Americorps/Corporation for National Community Service and the National Association of Community Health Centers. Prior to joining the Peace Corps, I returned to serve my hometown as a Rural Community Health Volunteer with ARCH. During my service I:★ Provided Spanish-English translation services for nurses and doctors during patient consultations.★ Developed bilingual materials for diabetic education classes, specifically aimed at immigrant populations.★ Assisted in the teaching of diabetic and chronic illness educational courses.★ Headed a community outreach campaign aimed at Spanish-speaking immigrant populations.

CCOF is a nonprofit organization governed by the people who grow and make our food. Founded in California more than 40 years ago, today its roots span the breadth of North America and is internationally recognized. CCOF is supported by an organic family of farmers, ranchers, processors, retailers, consumers, and policymakers. During my time with CCOF I: ★ Conducted a research and outreach campaign on genetically modified organisms.★ Coordinated with clients and certification staff during the process of organic certification.★ Served as CCOF’s main contact with the public, fielding calls and answering inquiries.

Washington D.C. Metro Area

NRDC works to safeguard the earth—its people, its plants and animals, and the natural systems on which all life depends. As a leading environmental NGO, NRDC has more than three million members and online activists with the expertise of some 700 scientists, lawyers, and policy advocates across the globe to ensure the rights of all people to the air, the water, and the wild. As an international intern in the Washington, DC office I:★ Created an online archive to record developments of a crucial campaign in Belize related to the building of dams and hydroelectric power.★ Investigated, authored and published (via Internet) an article weighing the impacts of development on the environment.★ Translated complex documents on illegal logging and environmental law from Spanish to English.★ Prepared an informational pamphlet on illegal logging in Chile.
