Since 2015 I have been one of the eight Nottinghamshire Police Forensic Collision Investigators.As a Forensic Collision Investigator, we specialise in the investigation of road deaths and serious injury collisions across Nottinghamshire and provide forensic services to the detectives within the Serious Collision Investigation Unit.We provide a 24/7 response 365 days of the year, attending serious and fatal collisions, homicides and terrorist incidents where a vehicle is involved. We attend in all weathers, at all times of the day, examining the scene and the vehicles involved, ensuring all evidence is recorded, taking detailed photographs and using either a 3D laser scanner to capture the scene, or record the topographical features of the road and the positions of all material evidence using surveying equipment. Testing is also conducted at the scene where appropriate to obtain measurements and any further evidence that will subsequently help build a picture of what has occurred. Analysis of CCTV recordings, dashcam footage and digital data extracted from electronic components fitted to vehicles then takes places. Applying the rules of physics, mathematics, and statistical analysis allows for the production of a reconstruction report that explains, where possible, how events unfolded. These include CAD drawings, photographs and videos where appropriate of the collision reconstruction.Being a Forensic Collision Investigator largely about solving puzzles: Sometimes all the pieces are provided; sometimes the pieces have to be found, but more often than not, the pieces have to be formed from analysing and interpreting all the available evidence.The techniques utilised for reconstructing collisions I have also used to support the investigation of other serious crimes, especially where the accurate positioning of persons or vehicles is required.
