From Fall of 2017 to Spring 2019, I worked as an undergraduate researcher in Prof. Steven Emory’s Analytical and Materials Chemistry research group at WWU. My research focused on developing analytical applications for Surface-enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) Spectroscopy using noble metal nanoparticles as substrates. I was involved with several projects over the two years I spent in the research group that have allowed me to delve deeply into the literature and work to expand the current frontiers of the field. Coaxial Dual-Flow Electrospray: A past project was the design and construction of a small-scale research quality coaxial, dual-flow electrospray for use in creating more detailed SERS substrates with the nanoparticles produced in the lab. I was awarded an internal grant from WWU of $500 to fund this project. Raman Microspectroscopy of SERS-Active Substrates: This collaborative multi-stage project include the synthesis and characterization of nanoparticle-seeded, acid-swellable latex polymer beads which function as a SERS-active biological compatible analytical probe. These beads have the potential to be used in targeted drug delivery by allowing for the detection and tracking of attached drug molecules.
