Assisting on family farm from a young age has created competency in many aspects on animal husbandry; with a particular involvement in the sheep enterprise through drenching, vaccination, foot trimming and assisting with the lambing of 750 mule cross Texel ewes on an indoor system. Ability to work independently and as part of a team to rear cade lambs, bed pens for ewes and lambs and assist with difficult births. The farm has a suckler herd of Saler cattle with spring and autumn calving blocks; the cattle require attention to detail and an awareness of health and safety when checking pregnant stock, feeding and completing tasks such as disbudding calves and TB testing.

Employed for weekend milking of 840 British Toggenburg and Nubian goats; on a twice-a-day milking system with parlour capacity to milk 50 at once. This position requires attention to detail and initiative to identify and manage issues such as mastitis and listeria which are common problems. Responsibility to maintain high hygiene levels through cleaning udders and washing down of the parlour after every milking to reduce disease incidence. In addition this job has taught me about being patient when training fresh kidders onto the parlour and whilst moving goats around as they are move sensitive than other livestock I have worked with in the past.

Summer placement in 2022 and 2023 involving aiding other employees with the organisation of receptions and events leading up to the Royal Welsh Show. Use of Canva to construct engaging invitations and responsibility to circulate through Outlook webmail. Position required high levels of communication with other colleagues and business owners to complete catering orders as well as new shop merchandise. Covering website design and social media content whilst organisation was seeking to employ someone for the role. During the event I was liable for sorting out any issues that YFC members experienced.

Gogerddan Campus, Aberystwyth, Ceredigion

Monitoring the pregnant ewes for any birthing difficulties on daytime and night-time shifts. Role included cleaning and disinfecting individual pens, ensuring ewes had access to feed and water at all times as well as tagging and marking lambs to move outdoors. Most interesting part of the job was performance recording of all lambs and ewes for the following factors: lamb birthweight, ewe’s maternal ability, milkiness of ewe; this perspective of the sheep industry taught me that it is not all about the manual labour when you are trying to improve flock performance but other attributes can influence the business.

Employed on a mixed farm compromising of sheep, rearing heifer weanlings and a 32,000 free range hen unit. Daily responsibilities included bedding down and feeding of the heifers, checking the sheep flocks for health issues and packaging of eggs off the conveyor belts. Spent long periods of time working independently and using initiative to find jobs to fulfil. Completing of an accurate medicine book, Sheep Annual Inventory aswell as BPS paperwork; improved my knowledge of requirements that have to be maintained to maximise returns in the industry.

Involved producing high end floral presentations for weddings, funerals, christenings and general gifts; each is created to customer specifications. The floristry required excellent communication, time management and also responsibility to order stock and process transactions over the phone and online. This role has improved my accountancy skills and confidence with the general public especially learning to be empathetic in certain situations.

A seasonal role assisting staff with the Environmental Stewardship and BPS applications; this involved creating maps to support grant applications for muck stores and yards. In addition communicating with farmers to gain information on cropping systems, stocking records for applications. The role improved my record keeping and communication skills giving me an insight into real life business decisions.
