Prototype Technician
Race Team Mechanic / Race Team Engine Dresser
Race team engine dresser for the highly acclaimed Mercedes Formula One race team. In my time in this role I expanded responsibilities to become an engine dresser, number 2 mechanic during race weekends, and pit team member when the car was running. As an engine dresser I was accountable for the installation of all powertrain integration parts to the race car and power unit across all rounds of the 2017 - 2020 Formula One championships. I was responsible for the installation of the power unit to the chassis and all relevant connections made between the two. Once the car was assembled and throughout race weekends, I took on the responsibilities of a number 2 mechanic, involving set up changes and specification changes across all areas of the car. When the car was running my role evolved to oversee a front corner of the car specifically. This involved removal and refitting of tyre sets in the most intense of all environments, cooling of the relevant components within that area and any mechanical changes that were required. During my time as a pit stop team member, I progressed from front right wheel off to front right wheel on. My contribution in this high profile, high stress and time critical environment reflects my ability to excel when working in a team.
Build/Engine Systems Technician
I was accountable for the pre-assembly of all powertrain integration assemblies, these included: Water cooling systems Water-air charge air cooling systems Water-oil oil cooling system ERS cooling systems Complete Fuel system Exhaust systems Pneumatics systems This role involved me taking on multiple responsibilities and an extremely demanding workload due to the change in regulations between 2013-2014 which saw the introduction of the turbo charged V6 power units. My responsibilities included: Final production process of each individual part to ensure they were fit for purpose. Proof testing Pressure testing Assembly of all final assemblies The installation of powertrain integration components to race, spare and test engines The installation of components to chassis The complete build and support of virtual track test cars Comprehensive dyno support Attended track tests and races to temporarily replace the race team engine dressersA large part of this role was the planning and mileage tracking of all assemblies, I was responsible for producing a detailed service plan for assemblies and creating build sheets within a SAP system to allow mileage accumulation to take place. I was responsible for using this same SAP system for tracking the servicing of individual parts. This also involved creating excel documents to supply to the trackside departments to allow them to build the car appropriately.
Pre Fit Technician
Having successfully established myself within a domestic championship winning race team and having gained vital vocational qualifications whilst doing so, such is my ambition, I took the brave choice to leave a stable full time role and take a 12 month temporary role at the highest profile of all teams. Having built strong relationships with the team around me and made a good impression through hard work and commitment, I was fortunate enough to prove myself within 4 weeks and be offered a permanent role within the team.
Number 2 Race Team Mechanic
Took full responsibility for car build and race preparation for all 30 rounds of the British Touring Car Championship. In the absence of the No’1 Technician I was frequently entrusted to assume responsibility for complex components such as the gearbox and differential rebuild, responsibilities which I assume with pride and success.
Number 3 Race Team Mechanic
Took responsibility for bodywork and spares preparation, plus No’3 Technician at all race weekends.
