I found my love for software development during my first degree in biochemistry. While doing lab write-ups I would get carried away with the intricacies of Excel and numerical approximation. Eventually, I decided to go back to school for another degree and progress towards a job more related to computer science. During my time at UBC, I have had the opportunity to work at both CDRD and Visier. At CDRD my role was mainly to write R scripts and use various statistical methods to glean information from past experiments they had run. Visier offered a much more traditional software developer position. It was here that I was able to learn quite a bit about databases, frameworks like Angular and React, back-end work in Scala, and how to apply statistical methods in a larger application.
