The mission of Three Rivers Park District is to educate and entertain through the preservation of our natural resources. This position facilitated that goal by restoring and managing native prairie, savanna, forest, and wetland ecosystems through a variety of management practices such as prescribed fire, over-seeding, pesticide application and chainsaw operation. Additionally, in this position I performed survey work to better understand the ecosystems we served. This required use of ESRI GIS software such as ArcGIS, Field Maps, and Collector.

In this position I managed the day-to-day operational functions of the lab. This mainly included restocking glassware, managing records of samples and experiments, and supporting the scientists in any way possible. I would often perform electrophoresis or PCR to supplement their work. A large portion of my time was spent managing the lab animals, which required daily commitment and consistent hands-on care

This program’s goal was to assess the health of the lake based on fish communities and identify potential stressors. In this position I had the opportunity to expand my sampling skills with backpack electrofishing, seining, and trap netting. I improved my identification skills of fishes in the field, both game and non-game species. Other duties included overnight travel to survey lakes, maintenance of surveying equipment and boats, mending seines, and managing data records in the field and office settings.

In this position, I was a part of the team responsible for managing the Big Biodiversity experiment, which is researching the effects of biodiversity on plant communities. I was in charge of managing the species composition for the experimental plots, which allowed me to gain valuable experience in Minnesota prairie plant identification and field methods for vegetation sampling.
