As Executive Director, Sam manages all day-to-day and long-term strategic elements of the nonprofit. The key goals of the organization are to catalyze partnerships between Japanese Universities and US Universities, develop a US-Japan fellowship program that connects Japanese and US academic researchers, fundraise for Japanese academic programs that support entrepreneurial endeavors, scientific research, and policy innovation and incubate via fiscal sponsorship US and Japan based projects in scientific disciplines.

As Head of Operations and Partnerships for xD, Sam managed day-to-day operations for xD, a data science consulting group within the federal government, including hiring for xD’s flagship program: the Emerging Technology Fellowship. She also managed ongoing projects and collaborations with government partners, and building infrastructure around impact metrics and reporting to improve xD’s work and showcase the team’s accomplishments. Sam facilitated collaborations between researchers pursuing technical projects in emerging technology and policymakers and worked closely with the xD founder to set the vision and strategy for xD as the team grew and started projects in new technical areas such as privacy-enhancing technology and artificial intelligence. Finally, Sam worked on rebuilding xD’s web presence, primarily through its website and Census Bureau internal communication channels.

As the Executive Director of CCI, I set the strategic vision for the organization, run day-to-day operations, and work closely with the CCI research team on various research projects. I manage a seven figure budget and a 20 person team. At the height of the pandemic, CCI founded The Chelsea Project (https://thechelseaproject.org/), an initiative that successfully improved testing and vaccination rates in Chelsea, MA and led groundbreaking work to combine wastewater monitoring with community-based health. The initiative is a collaborative effort that includes city government, community organizations, industry partners, and researchers from MIT and Harvard.CCI has also served as a fiscal sponsor for several projects and organizations including Mathesar (https://mathesar.org/): an open source database tool that lets anyone, of any technical skill level, organize and use data with ease.

YarnLabs was a fiscal sponsor for projects spinning out of MIT. I managed day-to-day operations at the organization which included administrative and operational tasks to support incubated projects.

I managed graduate students and research scientists on a wide range of subjects. I also worked with the Media Lab and Central MIT development teams to develop and execute institutional, philanthropic and development efforts.

At Harvard, I was a founding member of the Berkman Assembly program that brought technologists from industry and academia to Harvard to collaborate on technology-related projects in the public interest. I also researched tech policy areas including cybersecurity and artificial intelligence as well as worked with the Faculty Director of the Berkman Klein Center on guiding the policy and projects of the Center.

I responded to domestic law enforcement requests for user data, specifically for Gmail, Google Voice, and Google Wallet products.
