Frontend Developer

Worked in a cross functional team, developing and maintaining the front end for Kallidus' employee performance management product which was written in TypeScript and Knockout. Added React components within the Knockout pages to implement new features in accordance with our internal design system.Wrote Jest unit tests and Cypress component/VRT tests. The latter used Gherkin syntax (Given, When, Then), making heavy use of data tables. Performed cross-browser testing via BrowserStack, accessibility testing for keyboard access and screen readers using NVDA. This testing regime led to a proven track record of stability and low bug count in production.Worked with UI/UX designers to plan future work. Translated mock-ups (Axure) and visual designs (Zendesk/Figma) into usable components and feature implementations. Routinely brought usability and design issues to the UI/UX team, discussing how to resolve the issue, offer suggestions and advise them on the possible options, as they were responsible for ensuring consistency across all our products.Participated in agile ceremonies as well as facilitating those meetings.Accomplishments I am particularly proud of:• Developed a PowerShell script to automate translating JSON localisation files using the Microsoft Azure machine translation API, reducing a half hour+ task into running a script that executed in seconds.• Wrote a fake server for testing in Node.js using Express. It responded to requests by either serving fixture JSON files or generated fake responses on the fly, cycling through empty, error, or good responses, chaos monkey style. It could also proxy requests to APIs in an integration environment to get real world data and so the whole app could be tested without having to create and maintain fake responses for every API endpoint.• Created an SPA for branding the product with customer colours and logos. Contributing a colour picker component to the internal component library and adding to Storybook documentation.

Frontend Web Developer

Remote

Onboarding new clients using the RevLifter platform to create voucher code sites and client basket popup deals.Mostly creating CSS to match designs provided in Sketch format (via zeplin.com, invisionapp.com and also using the Lunacy windows client) but also had to edit Vue and Twig templates and also used Less to parameterise some of the CSS creation.

Front End Developer

Poulton

brought in to improve the UI/UX of a call centre web app for car insurance quotes. It included: ● Adding support for HTML5 attributes to the back end by writing a RichFaces custom tag renderer to pass attributes normally ignored by RichFaces' components into the HTML output. ● Re-writing the CSS into SASS to reduce duplication and changing from CSS class names based on presentation to semantic class names based on the nature of the content, making it easier to re-skin the site for new customers. ● Created a responsive layout for forms that works on desktop, tablet and mobile and adding polyfills (using js-webshim) for HTML5 inputs so we can write to the HTML5 spec for all devices.Adding features and debugging JavaScript issues using Chrome’s Dev Tools. ● Fixing browser layout and compatibility issues on IE using modern.ie VMs, Android devices using the Android Emulator and Chrome’s remote debugging protocol. Using Apache Weinre to remote debug on mobile browsers that do not support the Chrome remote debugging protocol and most recently using the crossbrowsertesting.com service. ● Writing Selenium tests and fixing them to be more resilient to changes on the front-end, e.g. by using “qa-” prefixed class names that would not be reused for anything else and thus likely to change. ● Introduced visual regression testing of CSS styling using the tool CSS Critic. This allowed quick testing of CSS changes for many different uses on a page (e.g. different html using the same CSS for editable and read-only output, forms with and without errors, etc.) across many screen resolutions, and for CSS “theme” files for each white-label brand (all output from the same SASS source). This also required fixing bugs in the JavaScript source of CSS Critic and adding a feature to make test specifications more concise and submitting a pull request back to the GitHub project.
