GreenCape is a Sector Development Agency established by the Western Cape Government to unlock the investment and employment potential in the Western Cape’s green economy. The key focus areas of GreenCape include: Water, Energy, Agriculture, and Waste. As the Waste Sector Desk my role is to engage with the various stakeholders from industry, government and academia to better understand the opportunities for, and the barriers to investment in green technologies, systems or processes, which contribute to beneficiating waste in the Western Cape, and South Africa as a whole. Essentially, a knowledge hub and facilitator for those looking to invest in waste beneficiation.

The Western Cape Industrial Symbiosis Programme (WISP) is a free facilitation service delivered through GreenCape. The service seeks to link businesses with unused / discarded resources (materials, expertise, logistics, capacity, energy and water), with other businesses that can use those resources within their production. My primary responsibility was to develop and maintain the Western Cape’s industrial symbiosis network, as well as to identify and facilitate mutually beneficial opportunities between companies. This was accomplished through the identification of various sector companies and subsequently their unused/residual resources, identifying other companies who could provide solutions or were able to take those previously unused resources, and facilitate those relationships until realisation. Further responsibilities included report writing, basic project management, chairing meetings, organise and facilitate workshops, and event organizing.

Responsibilities included assisting and undertaking in basic Environmental Impact Assessments, the facilitation of various Public Participation Processes, developing Environmental Management Programmes and Integrated Waste Management Plans, and have undertaken numerous Environmental Audits, including Environmental Control Officer auditing. Further responsibilities included report writing, basic project management, proposal writing, and GIS data collection, map making and analysis.

Responsibilities included assisting in various Public Participation Processes for a number of Environmental Impact Assessments, Environmental Control Officer auditing and Geographical Information Systems data capture and analysis.
