From 1977 to 1980, he was involved with a personal injury and criminal defense firm in Phoenix, Arizona, and from 1972 until 1977, he worked with the Federal Public Defenders office in Arizona. He attended Utah State University, where he graduated in 1969, and also is a 1972 graduate of the Arizona State University Law School in Tempe, Arizona.
