In 2020, Steward Observatory researchers developed a novel technique for economically producing double-curved metal panels to help fabricate cheaper satellite dishes. Recognizing the architectural implications of this technique, a cross-disciplinary team was assembled with the College of Architecture to expand and adapt this technology for economical building facades. I wrote a parametric script to produce optimally-tight surface curvatures within the tolerances of the novel thermoforming technique, and co-designed an installation to publicly exhibit the aesthetic and thermal potential of double-curved metal panel facades. Though the installation never advanced beyond a physical prototype, the script and research culminated in publication in the 2022 ACSA EMPOWER Conference Proceedings, for which I am a 25% co-author.
