Research Engineer

Responsible for software development and application of in-house wind turbine design tool.Software development:• Overhauled core software architecture with a modular alternative, vastly improving ease of use and development.• Implemented new input/output functionality, with the ability to interface with the WindIO standard, this being an internationally recognised yaml format to describe the vast number of components in a wind turbine. This allowed easy integration of existing turbine models from other research institutes, to perform further studies on.• Coordinated GitHub contributions from other users and developers, and wrote unit tests and documentation. Benefits included more robust development and easier use for new users.• Delivered training workshops on how to use the software to new users from academia and industry.Wind turbine design applications:• Performed structural and aero-structural optimisation studies of 15 MW and 20 MW wind turbines. These designs provided state-of-the-art baselines for a number of multi-stakeholder projects, with project goals including investigation of more sustainable/recyclable composite materials.• Using industry-standard software Bladed, performed full loads analyses of a 15 MW turbine for the development of a novel tower connection concept. The loads analyses aided in the sizing and design of the tower connection, which could vastly simplify the installation of enormous offshore turbine towers.• Validated stress states for 100 m + wind turbine blades, using results from higher fidelity FE shell analyses to give greater confidence in the beam/cross-section models used within the optimisation routines.

The aim of the PhD was to apply multi-disciplinary optimisation to the aero-structural design of 100 m + composite wind turbine blades. Specifically, the objective was to minimise the levelised cost of energy, and the problem formulation allowed for advanced structural design philosophies to be explored. The optimisation software, known as ATOM, was programmed in Matlab, C and Python, and encompassed multiple physics-based modules assembled within a robust automated analysis pipeline. The analysis pipeline was then wrapped within a monolithic optimisation architecture, allowing significant freedom in the design studies that could be performed. Supercomputing facilities were also used to accelerate and scale performance.Significant cost of energy reductions were found, as the optimiser favoured variable-stiffness, shape-adaptive blades that can passively alleviate loads. Bend-twist coupling was a key feature, and a novel structural mechanism for achieving this coupling was revealed in the optimal designs; avoiding the drawbacks associated with conventional bend-twist coupling solutions.Thesis: https://research-information.bris.ac.uk/ws/portalfiles/portal/312520978/Thesis_SamScott_Final.pdfAdditional experiences:• Validated many of the analysis modules against industry-standard software, and months of measurement data from an existing 7 MW turbine.• Programmed a variety of analysis modules and numerical solvers, including gradient-based optimisation, solvers for systems of non-linear equations, and finite-element mesh generation.• Developed a parametric representation for wind blade structures, comprising regions of fibre-reinforced laminates and sandwich panels. Applied structural optimisation to design lay-ups, including composite failure constraints (strength, buckling, fatigue).• Designed, built, and tested a carbon-fibre wing box with specific loading and geometric requirements.• Trained on metal mill/lathe, built a bicycle frame-building fixture.
