Apprentice Rolling Stock Technician
CurrentAs an Apprentice Rolling Stock Technician at SWR, I’ve gained extensive hands-on experience across various depot functions, including stores management, plant operations, C4 heavy maintenance, and C6 overhauls. This exposure has provided a strong understanding of rolling stock servicing and operational workflows. In conjunction with my apprenticeship, I’m studying electromechanical engineering, enhancing my technical knowledge and skills. My training has covered:Health & Safety: Ensuring compliance with critical railway safety protocols.Accessibility: Promoting disability awareness and inclusive passenger experiences.UK Railway Practices: Understanding the dynamics of privatisation vs. nationalisation.Problem-Solving & Project Management: Developing techniques to address technical challenges.I’ve built proficiency in routine maintenance, fault diagnostics, and system inspections, working on components such as mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems. I’ve also gained experience with diagnostic software, system readouts, and data analysis, enabling an effective approach to the troubleshooting of performance issues.Additionally, I’ve been a part of and supported mid-life overhauls, system upgrades, and rolling stock modifications, ensuring high reliability and efficiency standards. Exposure to fleet management has also further expanded my understanding of scheduling, resource allocation, and long-term planning.Heading into my fourth year, I will lead an Apprentice Engineering Project of my own, applying my skills to solve a real-world challenge within the depot or wider company. The project will culminate in a formal presentation to managers and senior leaders, showcasing my skills and ability to deliver impactful engineering solutions.I feel already that this apprenticeship has equipped me with a robust blend of practical and theoretical expertise, preparing me to contribute meaningfully to the railway industry and excel in my career.
