Sandra is an Aboriginal woman from the Kamilaroi Nations, with over 40 years of experience working in the health care and tertiary education sector. She was one of the first tertiary qualified nurse graduates from Cumberland College of Health Sciences (now part of Sydney University) with a Bachelor of Applied Science (Nursing) in 1980. In her first 20 years of clinical experience, she worked in settings as diverse as intensive care to community health and was an academic in medical-surgical nursing at the University of Technology Sydney. During this time, she completed a Master of Arts (Work and Education) from Macquarie University and welcomed two beautiful daughters into the world. For the past 20 years, Sandra has worked, researched, and facilitated learning in the area of mental health and well-being. She completed a Master of Advanced Nursing (Mental Health) from Griffith University and a Graduate Certificate in Higher Education at ACU. She is interested in facilitating more Indigenous new graduate nurses to become mental health nurses.
