Sandra Winter was born and raised in Zimbabwe before moving to Cape Town in South Africa where she was the Financial Director and owner of a number of related businesses in the advertising industry. In 2003 Sandi moved to Lexington, Kentucky with her husband and three children where she received a Master of Health Administration in May 2006 and a PhD in Public Administration in December 2009 from the University of Kentucky. Her graduate research work focused on the health care that is provided to prison inmates in Kentucky. In 2010 she moved to California and began working at the Stanford Prevention Research Center (SPRC) where her first appointment was as the Project Manager for a partnership between SPRC and Qassim University in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. From September 2012 - August 2014 she was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow with SPRC where her research focus included the effect the neighborhood built environment has on the health of under-served individuals and how to use technology to promote physical activity in older, tech-naive individuals. She is also interested in how community residents can be empowered to advocate for improvements in their neighborhood. In September 2014, Sandi continued her career with SPRC in the role of Program Director for the Wellness Living Laboratory - a novel initiative that seeks to build the scientific evidence base about well being. WELL researchers will generate and test novel hypothesis-driven inquiries, tested at the population level, to inform improvements to health and well-being globally. In April 2019, Sandi left Stanford to take a position in her home town as Executive Director of Senior Coastsiders.
