The National Urban and Community Forestry Advisory Council (NUCFAC) is an appointed advisory council to the Secretary of Agriculture on urban forestry and related issues. The 1990 Farm Bill created NUCFAC to bring together the wide variety of voices raised about a common concern: the present health and future preservation of America's urban forests. NUCFAC was founded to synthesize the full spectrum of views into a consistent vision, as a foundation for practical policy on urban forestry.

Greater Denver Area

Managed and provided leadership to a staff of 16. Team included administrative professionals, arborists, development review specialists and data owner. Managed goods and services budget of $2.6 million. Accurately tracked all expenditures, and generated budget projections. Oversaw purchasing per City regulations. Administered tree pruning, removal, planting, treatment, and marketing contracts. Lead team that created and actively promoted the Be A Smart Ash emerald ash borer public awareness campaign. Oversaw the creation of annual outreach strategies, all campaign content and messaging. Supervised program that plants 3,000 public right-of-way trees annually along with treating 3,000 ash trees. Built and maintained successful relationships with non-profit, green industry, municipal and service organizations to meet common goals. Served as the point of contact for all research requests from internal and external researchers. Communicated regularly with elected officials and the general public about implementing sound urban forestry principles. Worked across all City departments to raise awareness of the role urban forestry plays in creating a sustainable Denver. Core team member of the working group that created the City’s first-ever climate adaptation/resiliency plan and climate action plan update. Lead Community Forester volunteer training program, including curriculum development, teaching classes, and organizing and leading volunteer pruning events. Maintained more than 200 tree service licenses. Managed contracts for nursery stock, tree installations, tree pruning and removal, pesticide treatments and marketing.

Denver, Colorado, United States

Managed all aspects of The Mile High Million, Denver’s million tree planting initiative including outreach, social media, site analysis, mapping, coordination, planning and implementation. Responsible for the creation and implementation of metro-wide tree planting events utilizing volunteers and corporate partners across 39 municipalities, including: Suncor Energy, Denver Nuggets, and the Colorado Rockies. Coordinated and led all aspects of tree planting-related events including: community outreach, volunteer recruitment, material purchasing, event public relations, and coordination with city agencies to ensure public safety. Managed all aspects of the only US Department of Energy American Recovery and Reinvestment Act-funded tree planting project to reduce structural energy consumption through strategic tree planting. Served as a key department contact and coordinator during the 2008 Democratic National Convention in organizing a day of service for Michelle Obama, including coordination with US Homeland Security. Maintained relationships with monetary and in-kind donors resulting in over $2.1 million in cash contributions.

Coordinated the activities of 130 Denver County Colorado Master Gardeners. Responsible for recruiting, selecting and training each year’s new class of Apprentice Master Gardeners. Created tracking and reporting systems for: hours of volunteer’s time contributed, continuing education completed by volunteers, contacts made by horticulture staff and volunteers with the public, website hits and monies generated through fundraising and user fees. Planned, organized, and hosted Denver, Adams and Broomfield County’s 11 week CMG training, annual awards banquet, group training outings and annual plant sale fundraiser. First point of contact for the public and members of the Green Industry for research based horticultural information. Provided high quality customer service to all members of the public, volunteers, CSU faculty and all City and County Staff.

Denver Urban Gardens comes alongside residents, and together, we grow community - one urban garden at a time. DUG offers neighborhoods the essential resources for community gardens, including ongoing technical expertise with: securing sustainable land for gardens, designing and building gardens, supporting garden organization, leadership, outreach and maintenance, utilizing gardens as extraordinary places for learning and healthy living; and linking gardens with related local food system projects and policy.DUG currently operates over 135 community gardens throughout Metro Denver, including more than 40 school-based community gardens. In addition to building and supporting community gardens, DUG operates DeLaney Community Farm, the Master Composter Training Program, the Master Community Gardener Training Program, the Free Seeds and Transplants Program, and provides extensive opportunities for youth education in nutrition and gardening.
