It was established in 1962 and is sponsored by the Navy League of the United States and is supported by both the U.S. Navy and Coast Guard. The program is designed to develop an interest and ability in seamanship and seagoing skills, instill virtues of good citizenship and strong moral principles, demonstrate the value of an alcohol-free, drug-free, and gang-free lifestyle, and expose cadets to the prestige of public service and a variety of career paths through hands-on training with our nation's armed services. As a cadet, I was exposed to the full rigors of a military training program and developed my leadership skills through monthly drills and advanced training sessions. Advanced training sessions provide the opportunity to explore various career fields and familiarize cadets with Navy life and Navy-style discipline.
