Head Of Regional Innovation Fund Advisory Service (Secondment)The Young Foundation Mar 2010 - Apr 2011I led the Regional Innovation Fund Advisory service – a joint venture with NESTA - which is supporting the management and disbursement of the £220 million NHS Regional Innovation Funds across the 10 English strategic health authorities (SHA). Each SHA has a fund to stimulate the invention, implementation and spread of innovative ideas in their area. RIFAS supports each of the SHAs in the management of their fund, including the selection, support and evaluation of projects. RIFAS’s role focuses on understanding how new ways of working that puts patients, carers and clinicians at the heart of health care can transform heath benefits and reduce costs. I worked closely with 10 of the 315 funded projects offering advice, support and impact and cost analysis. -
Head Of Social FinanceNesta Sep 2008 - Mar 2010I led NESTA's £4 million risk capital programme to give high growth social enterprises the resources they need to scale. I worked with partners to test capital supply routes and opportunities - through funds, individual investors and market information. These supply-side initiatives were complemented by a programme of projects to investigate effective support for ambitious social enterprises and entrepreneurs. -
Deputy Chief ExecutiveCommunity Development Finance Association (Cdfa) Jan 2003 - Aug 2008As a founding member of the senior management team (with the Chief Executive) I was responsible for the growth and development of this young, dynamic trade association which supports UK-based community development finance institutions (CDFIs). Our focus was to grow and professionalise this new sector to provide radically different solutions to financial exclusion in the UK. These early social enterprise experiments have - in part - led to the explosion in interest in the model and an understanding of the power of capital in achieving social change. My main roles at the cdfa were to increase awareness and understanding of the community development finance (CDF) industry with practitioners, funders and investors to support growth in the sector. Community development finance institutions are social enterprises providing financial services to businesses and individuals that are either unable or unwilling to access finance from the traditional financial sector.

Deputy Team LeaderNew Economics Foundation Jan 1999 - Jan 2003I joined the New Economics Foundation at a time of great excitement and interest in new ways of solving old problems. As the head of community development finance within the Enterprising Communities team I had a broad range of roles and responsibilities. These included developing strategy, planning and implementing a variety of policy programmes to achieve enduring change and directing a variety of research, training and consultancy programmes in the fields of community development finance, social enterprise, enterprise support and economic inclusion.I worked on a range of programme including the development of a Community Credit Union Growth Fund, the role of disclosure legislation in building new financial systems, economic inclusion strategy for regional agencies and the Social Investment Task Force. -
ConsultantAcord, London Oct 1998 - Mar 1999I carried out the consultation work and wrote ACORD's micro-finance policy. I also investigated the role of micro-credit in hyper-inflationary contexts and assisted in the development of the micro finance consultation paper in liaison with ACORD field staff. I contributed to a new consultative gender policy drawing on reports from field programmes and working closely with the organisation's gender steering committee. Both projects involved desk and library searches and drew on quantitative and qualitative data from the field, presentations and fieldwork and analysing budget codes and financial reports.
