Ndola, Zambia

As a community development volunteer, I took part in a two-month long intern-style partnership with the Jubilee Centre in Ndola, Zambia. Jubilee Centre focuses on Christian ministry and community development through church partnership. I worked and lived with a team of three for eight weeks. Our main projects included interviewing forty orphans and vulnerable children (OVC's) and their respective forty guardians, in order to profile them and to help begin the process of assessing their needs for professional counseling. In addition to working with OVCs, we also edited several multipage office reports, helped make and distribute food in feeding programs, helped to build part of a house with Habitat for Humanity, painted a mural in the community, participated and documented a Voluntary Counseling and Testing Day rally, wrote a plethora of reports (for activities we participated in), and took thousands of documentary photos. Essentially, this internship equipped me with hands-on journalistic and relational experience with diverse age groups in a cross-cultural context.
