About Sarmad Iqbal
I am an economist and a lawyer by degree and a rights campaigner by passion. Over Two decades of professional journey i have advocated for the rights of vulnerable, marginalized and socially excluded segments of society, be it in emergency situations or impacts of disjointed policy implementation and insensitive cultural practices. Alongside human rights activism, I am also active among civil society platforms striving for appropriate policy framework at provincial, national, regional and global arena in relation to Environment and climate change adaptation. I have widely campaigned for adequate policy measures to tackle/address these emerging challenges and am well known environmental activist not only among communities but also among decision makers, think tanks and academia. My experience of working in on-going emergency situations in continuum to creating long term strategies to combat poverty and injustice. My most recent endeavor was the launch of Climate Induced Migration - "A Governance Perspective" Study at the Blue Zone in COP 26. I am also the author/contributor of numerous papers/books and research studies. Currently associated1. Using IRC data, evidence from operations in Pakistan, external sources, and working with multiple stakeholders at policy & implementation level I am facilitating the generation of evidence, messaging, and positions to contribute to policy change. Also, identifying relevant stakeholders, forging and fostering strategic partnerships. As the Head of Policy Advocacy, Strategic Partnerships and Communications, I am continuously monitoring the evolving humanitarian, development, and political context in Pakistan as well as the region to understand the insinuations for IRC’s programming, policy messaging and finding appropriate opportunities for IRC to initiate policy engagement in favor of the affected communities One of my major roles is to represent IRC in external discussions and working groups to contribute to the development of inter-agency positions; leading the IRC’s communications teams locally and working with HQ to ensure public messaging is in line with country program advocacy priorities and objectives. -
