Kelly Schutt is a Director's Fellow at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory where he researches breakthrough solar energy materials, perovskites, that are poised to become a climate change solution. In addition to solar energy research, he is working on a commercial prototype for medical imaging with perovskites, which can enable safer and more affordable patient diagnosis with improved accuracy.Kelly helped save 5,000 annual scholarships for first-generation and underrepresented students through an economic analysis of taxpayer benefits that was presented to Congress. He participates in science outreach events and has given presentations to audiences of up to 700 people. Kelly also serves as a mentor for Seaworthy Collective, a new accelerator for entrepreneurship targeted at ocean sustainability.Prior to NREL, Kelly completed a PhD in Condensed Matter Physics at the University of Oxford, where he studied under Professor Henry Snaith as a Marshall Scholar. Kelly holds a bachelor's in Materials Science and Engineering from Boise State University, where he researched DNA Nanotechnology as part of a collaborative grant with Harvard University and Micron Technology. He created the world's highest resolution 3D print of DNA nanostructures for public science engagement, which was presented to President Obama.
