I am a passionate advocate of "Software Engineering". There are those who envision the development of application as being similar to civil engineering; which is almost always a poor fit. To view what we do like erecting another house or bridge ignores its creative and nonlinear aspects. Any minimally innovative project has elements of discovery and learning that make it more akin to inventing a new type of aircraft. That doesn't mean it is a pure art that can't be planned and measured. Good development teams are both creative and disciplined. A leader in software engineering is someone who knows what testable, maintainable, and performant solutions looks like, has the ability to make others understand and appreciate that, and the will to keep high standards throughout.
