Working with a multidisciplinary team on the development, launch and operation of the BAE Systems AZALEA satellite cluster. Responsible for the Mission On-Board Computer software which receives and interprets command information from the ground station, communicates with, commands and controls all the other spacecraft hardware and software components, and retrieves and returns telemetry to the ground.

I joined the Wireless division of BAE Systems Digital Intelligence to lead the development and integration of equipment and standards for Cyber and Electromagnetic Activities (CEMA). This has been a step into an exciting new domain, into which I have found that my creative, engineering, design and project skills have readily transferred and I have been able to hit the ground running. As well as technology and engineering, the work involves both national and international governments, organisations and alliances.

The 10x department became focused specifically onto the task of developing an autonomous order delivery capability for Ocado. Selecting and collaborating with 3rd party companies, our job was to manage the project as well as to devise and build the onboard and off-board order processing systems. Specifically, my teams were responsible for the onboard order storage and presentation hardware and software, including comms and coordination with the off-board order management system.

With an increasing range of projects and technologies, the 10x department evolved to consist of technology-focused teams. I took on the role of managing the teams covering embedded software, electronics and mechanics. This continued to involve my capabilities in ideation, design and technical leadership, but also involved more recruitment and mentoring. In addition I oversaw the acquiring and fit-out of our electronics, mechanics and fabrication workshops, which I subsequently managed.

I combined my now extensive experience in software product development and live systems support with the opportunity to find leading edge ways for Ocado to operate in the near and medium-term future. My focus still being control systems, but here my role was essentially to exploit recent - and anticipated advances in computing, IOT, electro-mechanics and manufacturing techniques. An example of this was our collaboration with Magway Limited on an Innovate UK project to create an automated, high-throughput delivery system using induction-driven shuttles in underground or roadside tunnels. Another example was the autonomous delivery system trials we did in collaboration with Oxbotica.

With the arrival of my first child, the time came to settle back into a steady job.I was sceptical about the idea of working for a grocer, but when I finally went to visit Ocado I was blown away by the automation challenges of their warehouse.I initially worked on some conveyor control software but was soon directing my energy into the life cycle processes and software architecture that would allow the warehouse systems to reach the scale and sophistication at which they stand today. During this time I also led development teams on a number of machine control projects. I particularly enjoyed leading the design and development of the control system for OSR: 186 shuttles, 12 lifts, 12 pick stations & hundreds of meters of conveyor which had to be meticulously choreographed. In fact, this system was so successful that I subsequently oversaw the replication of this software for all of the inbound automation in Ocado's 2nd grocery warehouse. I also led the team developing an on-demand warehouse emulation facility for testing new and updated control systems.Since the warehouse was in operation 24x7, the role also involved on-call support.

Increasingly I found myself working with freelance software engineers, which seemed both a lucrative and exciting way to advance my experience and to see the world. I left BT to set up ProSoft Limited and worked for a range of companies including Vodafone, Alcatel, Compaq, McAfee/NAI, Royalblue, TNS, CS Design Software and Symbian (smartphone OS) - most of whom invited me to join as a permanent employee at the end of my contract. The work was generally embedded or back end software development in C++, but there was also some UI and database work using Visual Basic. Application areas included cellular frequency planning, telecoms, network management, data processing, and build, test & installation scripting.
