I joined Surrey Police as a Special Constable in April 2003. I received 18 weeks of part time classroom based training, mostly focussed on the law and procedure. Once I completed this I was assigned to Elmbridge borough, where I carried out general policing duties. After approximately 12 months I was signed off with Independant Patrol Status.During my time as a Special Constable I spent most of my service as part of the Elmbridge Safer Neighbourhood Team, but also worked regularly with Response Teams (responding to 999 calls), and Traffic.As part of my role I would regularly take statements from members of the public. I would also write my own statements, complete documents and prepare files for court. I attended the Magistrates' Court on a number of occasions to give evidence.I supported the training and development of new officers, both in Training School and tutoring them towards Independant Patrol Status. I was a qualified Tutor Constable, having undertaken the same Tutor Constable course as regular officers.I was also fortunate enough to gain experience working with a number of police forces besides by own on mutual aid. It was on one of these duties with City of London Police that I subsequently appeared in two episodes of the TV documentary 'Brit Cops'.In 2010 I was promoted to Sergeant, supervising eight Special Constables at my police station. I left after 10 years' service in April 2013.
