During my time at Rice University, I worked closely with a research team studying Cancer Phylogenetics. My main task during this REU (Research Experience for Undergraduates) was to take in as much information as possible, and along the way, learn about how research works. Alongside this, I developed a program, using Python, which traverses molecular data in the form of a VCF file. Traversing the data, then allowed my program to manipulate and analyze the cancer data from a TNBC patient. Using a recursive from of the Fitch Algorithm, I was able to reconstruct a binary tree and produce an annotated figure. Thus fulfilling the purpose of the project which was to automate the process necessary to create a publishable diagram of cancer phylogeny.
