As Communications Director and lead spokesperson for the Maine Democratic Party in the critical 2020 election cycle, I helped local, state, and national campaigns communicate their progressive values to voters and make the case for why they should give Democrats a chance to lead. I led the Maine Dems communications team to do everything from developing communications plans to publicize the party's goals, platform, accomplishments, and activities to coordinating with campaign and national partners to develop a strategic messaging plan and earned media tactics for the 2020 general election that primarily focused on health care, trade issues, and the pandemic.I advised the Executive Director and state Democratic Party Chair on interviews, rapid response messaging, op-eds, and speeches; wrote, pitched, and placed op-eds on behalf of the state Democratic Party Chair, elected officials, and other surrogates in local publications; and planned and executed more than a dozen press events with surrogates and elected officials to drive earned media coverage opposite visits from Trump campaign officials highlighting the administration's broken promises on health care, the opioid crisis, and trade agreements.

At Impact America, I directed the organization's SaveFirst tax training program in preparation for training 40 AmeriCorps members to manage 28 free tax preparation clinics across Alabama, Tennessee, South Carolina, and Florida and serve over 11,000 families. That work involved developing course materials and preparing AmeriCorps team members to conduct eight-hour training sessions in tax law for 700+ undergraduate, law school, and professional volunteers.I also developed an online tax law training program, including 12+ hours of tax law-specific training videos and related resources used by AmeriCorps teams across four states and led the SaveFirst training team in developing 70+ hours of new, interactive group tax trainings.Prior to tax season, I trained and supervised leadership team members to serve as points of contact for AmeriCorps members, including how to provide tax law support and address tax preparation clinic issues.Additionally, I organized and led strategic relationship development for SaveFirst outreach in Mobile, Alabama, including meeting with representatives from school systems, city government, community organizations, and local colleges to expand tax preparation services in the city.

As the SaveFirst Training Coordinator, I conducted 170+ hours of tax law training for 32 AmeriCorps members in preparation for advanced-level IRS certification needed to manage 22 free tax preparation clinics across Alabama and Tennessee as part of the SaveFirst initiative. I developed resources for and conducted all SaveFirst tax training for the Impact America team, including developing a tax law training curriculum (for basic, intermediate, and advanced level tax topics), as well as tax site management and logistics training. And, I developed training resources for the SaveFirst tax initiative’s Tennessee expansion pilot. I also personally trained and certified 150+ volunteers.During tax season, I supervised and served as the primary point of contact for AmeriCorps members working on-site as tax site coordinators, answering tax law questions and providing support as needed. I also developed detailed handbooks for team members to use in managing their tax preparation clinics.Finally, I gave short interviews and made television appearances on local television to promote the SaveFirst tax initiative in Memphis, Tennessee, and Birmingham, Alabama.

I served as an AmeriCorps member at Impact America to help implement statewide service-learning initiatives focused on health, education, and economics. That included managing a free tax preparation clinic serving low-to-moderate income households as part of a team that prepared returns for 8,200+ families throughout Alabama. To do this, I obtained advanced-level IRS certification on tax law topics, including filing status, dependencies, deductions, and credits. I also conducted eight-hour training sessions in tax law for undergraduate and law student volunteers and supervised their participation in the SaveFirst tax preparation initiative.Additionally, I conducted vision screenings and led volunteers as part of a team that screened 37,000+ preschool-aged children in Head Starts and daycares throughout Alabama.I also assisted with grant research, including identifying new funding sources and finding deadlines and application information, and drafted grant requests and applications.
