Steve is a member of the Labor and Employment Practice Group and the Business Law Practice Group. He represents business, nonprofit and individual clients in matters of tax planning, taxation of intellectual property, federal and state tax controversy, executive compensation, employee benefits and ERISA.In Steve’s employee benefits and executive compensation practice, Steve counsels employers, retirement plan sponsors and financial institutions regarding ERISA fiduciary status and liability. He also advises businesses and organizations in Maine and New Hampshire regarding the effects of Health Care Reform on their health plans, employee benefits and bottom line. More generally, Steve provides counsel to employers regarding flexible benefit plans, deferred compensation arrangements, split-dollar arrangements, health and life insurance plans, and stock and stock-related compensation arrangements. He also advises litigants in employment-related matters regarding the tax implications of paying and receiving proceeds, as well as required compliance and reporting measures.Steve’s tax practice focuses on counseling sellers and purchasers of intellectual property on tax-efficient transaction structures. He also represents businesses and individuals in administrative hearings before the IRS and Maine Revenue Services. Steve advises businesses and non-profit organizations on sales and use tax matters, corporate tax and other federal and state tax issues. Steve also guides clients through the Private Letter Ruling process provided by the IRS and advises clients regarding the tax and ERISA consequences of mergers and acquisitions.

During law school, Steve served as an intern with the Maine Revenue Services Appellate Division.
