On leaving school at 16 I went on a Chamber of Commerce YTS training program before joining Graham Builders Merchants and going through their Commercial Training Scheme. I stayed with Graham’s until 1989 and progressed to the role Sales Administrator. After a brief spell at Dyson Insulation, I joined Firestore Ltd, a local specialist fire protection manufacturing business in Huddersfield. They were subsequently acquired by Leighs Paints, where I held a number of management roles and moved to the company HQ in Bolton. Immediately prior to my appointment to the South East Asia role I carried out several business improvement investigations. My profile in the business increased significantly when I undertook two important supply chain projects. My report back to the Board resulted in a reversal of the Company's previous strategy and resulted in important improvements in lead times for both product and logistics.
