Dr. Shawn Evette Johnson is a native of Houston, TX and has been practicing as an orthopaedic surgeon since 2008. She completed her undergraduate degree at Southwest Texas State University (SWT) now Texas State University in 1999 with degrees in Exercise & Sports Science and Biology with a minor in Chemistry. During her tenure at SWT, she was involved and held offices in several on-campus organizations and activities including New Student Orientation, Black Student Alliance (BSA); Coalition of African American Students Unified for Equality (CAAUSE); Harambee; the esteemed Iota Omega Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. as well as the National Pan-Hellenic Council. She also reigned at Miss SWT in 1998, “The Year of the Flood.” She also won the Outstanding Senior Woman Award in 1999, which is awarded to one senior female student and is based on leadership, scholarship, character, potential and loyalty. Dr. Johnson was supremely appreciative of the nomination by her peers and has worked to uphold that recognition. Dr. Johnson obtained her medical degree at UT Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas then entered the United States Army on active duty as a commissioned officer. After completing her orthopaedic surgery residency, she became a staff orthopaedic surgeon in the US Army Medical Corps. After serving nearly 10 years, complete with two combat deployments and serving at three duty stations, she transitioned her practice to civilian orthopaedic surgery. Her military background has equipped her with clinical and surgical skills as well as interpersonal skills allowing her to interact with patients and ensure the best possible surgeon-patient relationship is developed. As a board certified surgeon, Dr. Johnson believes all of these are paramount in providing optimal care.Dr. Johnson is married to Christopher Burrell and has settled into life in Hempstead, TX. Her family and friend base are mainly in the Greater Houston Area. She takes pride in representing not only for herself but for all of them as they have been pivotal in her ability to become the person and surgeon she is today.
