As an application intended for a wide Canadian audience, design and development was done with adherence to modern Android user experience philosophies. In order to facilitate the design (and accompanying rapid design changes), as well as application stability, modern design pattern principles were applied throughout the development process, and I lead an early adoption of Kotlin.Successful development of the application was dependent on close communication and cooperation with the server team. I was closely engaged with the processes surrounding refactoring of legacy back-end code and designing a new RESTful API to replace the legacy API. This included an API update delivery and deprecation plan that would ensure that front-end clients were not left communicating with a deprecated API.As part of a team composed of mostly new employees with a wide range of backgrounds, part of my early experience at nCrypt involved providing consulting on tech decisions and problems with cryptocurrency-specific features. This includes intermittent connectivity, limited processing power and cellular bandwidth, devices being inactive for long periods of time, and even temperatures in northern climates.The Navistream vehicle client solution was required to collect data from numerous sources including over cell networks from a server (via RESTful API), geolocation data, and CAN Bus data.A selection of interesting challenges include:Designing and developing an offline GIS solution for reverse geocoding in accordance with ELD complianceDesigning and developing a system for updating the Navistream application, other companion applications, the ECM firmware, and GIS solution automaticallyOptimized ECM communication for update procedure (3 minutes to ~7 seconds)Applying event-driven application design patterns for responding to user interaction, as well as events from the Driving Regulations engine, CAN bus, location events, and more.
