About Peter Shipley
To recruiters:I am only interested in talking if you have a particular position in mind, I am not interested in working with staffing companies looking to randomly sow my resume in hopes of a bite To Everyone else:In the past:I conceived and wrote the very first automated network security scanner (NetSweep) way back in 1986 (years before ISS and other copycats). This was long before people believed in network based security, almost everyone back then felt that security was a "host based" problem, the scanner was meant as a proof of concept to show there was a problem from the network prospective.Around the same time I created and maintained one of the first bug & exploit database. When CERT was later founded this DB was used as a seed resource for their security knowledge database.Founded the UC Berkeley's OCF (Open Computing Facility) in (1988). The first all-volunteer, student-run, service group dedicated to free computing for all University of California.As a founding member of cypherpunks I hosted the first (or 2nd) anonymous remailers, setup up one of the first official PGP distribution sites.Around '93 or '94 I started thinking about network "auto-defense" and "reactive firewalls", I first filed a patent on these ideas in '96 and was awarded two patents on what has become one of the fundamentals of IDS ( #6,119,236 and #6,304,975 )Since then I have various amounts of independent security research, the results of which changed the requirements of a corporate security audit.In '97 I did independent security research on wardialing, the results of which exposed a significant security problem that was being ignored in most corporate environments.Invented Wardriving (the results of this work caused open WIFi to be acknowledged as wide spread security problem.These days I mostly work as a Principal Security / Project Manager for various security related projects.
