About Silvia Ramirez
I am a recent graduate from CSUCI and my academic career was directed into pursing veterinary medicine. During my time at Lost Angeles Pierce College I was a pre-vet student and I loved the animal science and biology courses that I took. Once I transferred to CSUCI I majored in biology, and I was amazed at how incredible we function at the cellular level. I also started to really enjoy organic chemistry, which led to my minor in chemistry. I have acquired wonderful experience working in animal medicine. I started pet sitting and dog walking while I was still in high school. Once at Pierce College I had the opportunity to work at the Equine Unit for a couple of semesters. My next work opportunity was at West Hills Animal Hospital. I worked there for 5 years and I was fortunate to learn what good medicine is. There is where I started to enjoy seeing emergency cases. After my time there I decided to work at Stevenson Ranch Veterinary Center. I also loved it there and I was exposed to acupuncture and laser therapy in animal medicine. I have a total of 8 years working in general practice. It's a great feeling to have long term clients know you and ask for you whenever they visit the hospital, it is one of the things I miss from general practice. I have been recently hired to work in the Emergency department at VCA ASEC. I like all aspects of working at an animal hospital but my favorite are the emergencies. I’ve learned that I thrive in high stress environments. The best feeling is when every staff member knows exactly what to do: from calming and talking to the owner to stabilizing the patient. That rush of adrenaline that lasts for a couple of seconds and everyone is on automatic mode – it’s poetry in motion and I love every second of it. I am learning so much and I am still eager to learn more. After 9 years of working professionally in veterinary medicine it still doesn't feel like "work" and my passion is still there. I applied to veterinary school last Summer 2021, unfortunately the schools I applied to declined my acceptance. I am planning on applying again this Summer/Fall 2022.During this application process I would like to gain experience working in the laboratory as a biologist or chemist.
