As Hospitality & Catering Manager I am accountable for the effective day to day running of the Refectory as well as any other catering activities in and around the Cathedral, from corporate hospitality to refreshments after services. I provide leadership for a team of 10 staff and 45 volunteers and work hard to achieve high standard of customer service. The Cathedral operates around three core Benedictine principles; worship, learning and hospitality. The Refectory is central to Cathedral hospitality and we strive to create 'a place where all are welcome' through our customer service. My first financial year as Manager has been challenging but the results have been phenomenal. The business went from making a loss in 2013 to achieve a profit 275% above the annual budget in 2014. This was achieved in a number of ways: - working closely with marketing manager to create a higher profile of the Refectory through more signage in the Cathedral Close, higher quality of advertisements and flyers. We also increased the online presence of the Cathedral as a whole with social media.- moved attitudes away from just waiting for customers to book events to creating a programme of in-house events such as monthly music nights, pre-concert suppers, special sunday lunches, monthly promotions and a tea festival. - changing preconceptions of a Cathedral coffee-shop/restaurant through the activities mentioned above and through producing high quality food.
