About Simon Munene
Creative design enthusiast. As a designer of interactive spaces and accessories, I have come to appreciate that the emphasis lies not on the elements, structures, products that we design but in how the intended user experiences them. All that we design lacks an important aspect to it if the person(s) we design for does not appreciate its qualities. Whether consciously or sub-consciously. Though, this does not mean we put a cap on our imagination and exploration.

Creative Director
My roles as the Creative Lead and Product Designer at Vussi Hounds Africa has helped me gain invaluable design experience. I have worked on contract basis for the pet accessories company as their lead product designer. This involves heavy prototyping where material sampling and manufacturing of durable, aesthetic as well as ergonomic has been involved. I have also done the photography for their products which entails the scene selection, taking of the photos and editing of the final product.
Construction Project Manager
I have been working at a management role in the design and build company where I have been running point on the construction processes of the build projects. This involves managing of project timelines, coordination of the professionals as well as sub-contractors involved in projects. I have been running point on the procurement processes of the said projects, this including material selection and assessment, coordinating of transportation to sites as well as following up on procurement schedules. I as well have been managing the financial implications of construction projects, this including documenting of work schedules and their costing and managing the project accounts in real-time. This role as well involves a direct line of communication with the clients to discuss the relevant stages of the construction projects and their relevant documents, up to and including decisions on design and build variations within the project. I have been working at a supervisory level overseeing the work of an intern and project management trainee on site.
Assistant Construction Manager
This role had me running two residential design and build renovation projects as well as a resort renovation interior build project. This entailed the design of detail specifications as well as conferring the said instructions to the relevant sub - contractors. i as well created and managed project timeline charts and procurement schedules for the said projects. This experience helped me improve my skills in people management, specifically task coordination and giving of instructions and design specifications to the relevant persons involved in build projects. I as well gained a better understanding of the several building stages on ground and how to predict and effectively manage the timelines for a construction project.
Intern
I worked for the design and build company at an intern capacity for three months. During this period I worked as the resident architect and site manager at two sites, the first was the interior build of an industrial themed office space within a warehouse structure and the second an interior renovation of a residential home. This opportunity allowed me to gain on site experience understanding the specification of design details and how to give instructions to contractors and sub- contractors in order to achieve the desired design.
President
I served as the President of the Architectural Students Association, managing the entire architecture student leadership and ensuring service to the Architectural student body. During this tenure we managed to host several workshops in collaboration with Tu Dresden, daD Genova and JKUAT University; as well as The Architectural Association of Kenya among other local industry players.
Sales Executive
I gained immense communication and critical thinking skills. Participating in field visits accompanied by the project lead consultants and clients gave me a perspective on client relations as well as team work. While field visits can be demanding work, I personally welcome them as a more tangible way to interact with the built environment.
