Glen Dimplex Home Appliances is a leading UK manufacturer and distributor of major household and commercial brands like Belling, Lec and Burco. After a number of years heading the company's HS&E team in an operational role, I took the opportunity to move to a more strategic governance and advisory role encompassing the following key activities:- Development of policy standards and procedures.- Establishing an integrated safety, energy and environmental compliance auditing programme.- Gaining and maintaining ISO 14001 and 50001 certification.- Providing training and mentoring services.- Providing relevant legal advice and an interface with the company's external legal advisers.The key driver to this change was working with the business Directors and Chief Executive to improve senior management governance and maintaining a solid foundation from which to further grow the business. In addition to this strategy role, I have taken on a diverse range of additional responsibilities including:- Property insurance.- Fire safety.- Business continuity.- Environment and ethics.- Public safety and liability management.In addition to advisory activities I help maintain a range of business KPIs and work closely with our operational teams to help drive significant improvements in business health and safety performance and maintain low business accident rates. I also continue to manage a complex portfolio of employer liability issues on behalf of the business, including legacy claims.

Heading a small team of health and safety professionals I was responsible for developing business policy and standards for safety and the environment in a complex manufacturing, logisitics and service operation. Operating at both board and shop floor level I provided legal advice, training programmes, audit and inspection systems, investigative skills and business standards expertise. On-site manufacturing processes covered included fabrication and coating of metal components, manufacture of EPS and light assembly processes. Other areas encompassed by the business included transport and logisitics, mobile installation, service and repair, and office and call centre services. Key aims that were met over time included the development of a formal health and safety management system, up-grading ISO certifications, improving insurance ratings to over 97% with attendant premium reductions, improvement of working environments and reducing accident rates to less than one tenth of national industry averages.

Midlands Electricity owned and operated the high voltage electricity distribution network covering the 13,000 square kilometres of Staffordshire, Gloucestershire and the West Midlands conurbations. With a turnover of over £1 billion this was a complex business serving the needs of industrial, commercial and domestic electricity consumers. Working as the deputy to the Group SHE manager I was responsible for managing the asset management, environmental, standards and audit, and information services sections of the Group SHE team. Our aim as a group was to ensure the development of clear business policies and standards, and to ensure that implementation of standards was audited to maintain the highest possible levels of corporate governance. The team developed a raft of policy standards in line with new legislation, developed a range of environmental controls and links with external bodies and pushed a whole new public safety agenda. With the many changes that were occurring in the industry at the time many key decisions were driven by budget and efficency targets required by the DTI and OFGEM. Key areas of achievement included the development of asset inspection systems through SAP, introduction of health and well-being programmes and developing the Safety Case for working live at 11,000 volts which was accepted by the HSE.

I undertook work to align standards and management systems between two merging businesses. I also provided practical technical support services include specialist monitoring to meet the requirements of Part B integrated pollution control licenses. Finally I provided a range of Occupational Health and hygiene services including the maintenance of engineering control systems on large items of process plant.
