Since being an excited 16 year old working on a Saturday at my local radio station, I have spent my life in media. I've watched the transformation of the industry and am excited to have been at the heart of it during probably the most dynamic period of change in its history. The birth of online services and the disruption and opportunity which that has provided have been central to my career in the last 15 years. The journey has taken me from radio, through digital music and now into Virtual Reality. My first start-up was the company that Tim Blackmore and I founded in 1989 with two staff and a single desk - Unique Broadcasting, We took Unique through much growth, many changes and quite a few mistakes, to emerge in 2014, through a reverse merger, as 7digital - a provider of B2B radio and music services in 42 countries with offices in London, San Francisco, Copenhagen and Kiev.During those 25 years of growth, we spawned other new dynamic start-ups, both from the talents of staff who have left us to develop their own businesses and through our investment in companies like the fast growing audio social networking company "Audioboom".It has been a tremendous journey, one I could not of dreamt of when I started in radio in 1982, becoming Head of Programming at Piccadilly Radio in Manchester.I served as CEO at 7digital for nearly 5 years, a period in which we consolidated our marketplace, acquiring two competitors and doubled our turnover. I'm immensely fortunate to have worked with many, many talented people in building those companies. In 2017 I began work with another fast-growing company Melody VR - and in April 2019 moved to become that company's Senior Non Executive Director. During 2020, my experience in the streamed music business proved useful in Melody's acquisition of digital music pioneer, Napster. Two years later and we negotiated a sale of the merged group to Algorand, valuing the business significantly higher than its then UK stock market valuation.

Ceo7Digital Jun 2014 - Mar 2019London, United KingdomAfter successfully reversing UBC Media into digital music platform provider 7digital, we transformed the business and I was privileged to head up a new and fast growing global provider of digital music and radio services to the likes of the BBC, SiriusXM, Imagination Technologies, Blackberry, HMV, Pioneer and many others.7digital, is uniquely positioned to meet the needs of the converging online music and radio industries. The next generation of digital music is about streamed and curated services - more "radio like" - and the combined experiences of the teams from UBC Media and 7digital meant that we could offer customers technology and white label services that ranged from download and streaming music services to online radio. 7digital's customers are those companies who want to build consumer services offering digital music and radio and who want to do it quickly, efficiently and cost effectively. The original UBC production businesses continue to lead in the provision of commissioned and advertiser funded TV and radio programming but those skills are now be employed in helping build new digital content services for customers who need a combination of radio content skills and access to a library of over 21m tracks with rights clearances in 42 countries.Over 5 years, we built the combined company to a turnover of £21m, with acquisitions along the way of two smaller competitors in Europe.A major corporate collapse in 2018 of one of our largest customers led to a re-structure and I brought in new shareholding from US backers. -
DirectorAudioboom Nov 2010 - Sep 2015LondonThe technology behind Audioboom (originally called Audioboo) was pioneered during the development work on Channel 4's digital radio ambitions in 2008/9, in which UBC Media was a shareholder. When C4 pulled out of radio, together with Daniel Heaf of C4 Ventures, UBC led the original angel investment which allowed developer Mark Rock to take the technology and productise it. He became the founding CEO of Audioboom.Over the next 4 years, we continued to invest, bringing in other Angels and companies like Imagination Technologies. UBC remained the leading shareholder and the driver of the business during a period of rapid growth. We brought in new CEO Rob Proctor in 2012, managing the difficult transition from the original founder to a professional manager. In April 2014, as part of the transformation of UBC's businesses, we created a separate listing for Audioboom, through a reverse into a listed shell, retaining a 20% shareholding and raising £3.5m to fund its further growth. In 2015, we saw our investment of £1.8m turn into a valuation, when 7digital sold its holding, of £5.6m as Audioboom continued to flourish. It has become a successful public company with tremendous growth prospects and I am happy to continue to be a small personal shareholder.I resigned as a Director in September 2015 after 7digital sold it's holding. -
CeoUbc Media Nov 1989 - Jun 2014Central LondonUBC Media started life in 1989 as 'Unique Broadcasting' as Tim Blackmore and I started out to pioneer the idea of independent production of radio programmes in the UK. Initially working in commercial radio with finance from sponsors, we created long running and successful networked programmes like 'The Pepsi Chart Show', 'Rockline' and 'The Break with Kit Kat'. The company grew rapidly, opened its own facilities business and in 1994 began also producing programmes for the BBC. Unique produced the first 'indie' programme broadcast on BBC Radio 1 and was instrumental in the creation of a sector now worth about £25m and comprising hundreds of production companies. The growth of Unique continued with the creation of a business providing Traffic News to all of UK commercial radio. Grown from scratch with minimal investment, this part of the business was sold in 2008 for £11m to Global Traffic Network, a US public company.Meanwhile, Unique itself had gone public - in 2000 - creating UBC Media as the holding company for a rapid expansion which took the company from a valuation on IPO of £20m to a peak of £55m. The company acquired other radio stations and production businesses and became a pioneer in digital radio and interactive services.Whist the market fell out of love with media, UBC had carefully marshalled its cash; unlike others, it had not used debt. Today, our production companies create TV as well as radio for both the broadcast industry and the online industry. UBC was an original investor is audio social network 'Audioboo' and it's interactive division has grown fast and provides apps and data software on three continents. In June 2014, we completed the companies transition to a digital business with the reverse takeover of 7digital
