I study and design new materials that can be used to store data, route light around optical circuits, display high resolution images, and more recently, detect low concentrations of diseases. I have worked at leading universities and research institutes across the globe (SUTD in Singapore, MIT in the US, ICFO in Spain, and AIST in Japan). In 2023 I returned to the UK and I am currently an Associate Professor in Electronic Materials within the School of Engineering at the University of Birmingham.My research group is not limited by the properties of existing materials. We use both experimental and theoretical techniques to design both the material properties and the device architectures. This approach combining materials design with device design opens new degrees of design freedom to holistically find solutions to new and existing problems.Aside from conducting and directing research, I am currently an associate editor at the Optica journal, Optical Materials Express. I handle between 20 and 30 papers each year. I enjoy this voluntary work and consider it important for building an active research community in photonic materials. Placement StudentNortel Networks Jul 2000 - Jun 2001Harlow, UkFibre laser and optical amplifier research. My 12-month internship involved building and characterising 1480 nm optical fibre laser. The system was quite interesting because it exploited six 915 nm laser diode pumps, and then the raman effect in a series of fibre cavities to shift the wavelength out to 1480 nm. Quite cool. This project and the overal experience at Notel was instrumental in my decision to study a PhD at the ORC (Many Alumini of the ORC worked at Nortel).
