My current research interests span many aspects of heterogeneous catalysis, predominantly focused on exploitation of fundamental mechanistic understanding in the development of new, better (greener, more efficient, more selective) chemistry and catalytic processes. This is often achieved through adoption of nanomaterials as well defined catalyst models and using new in situ spectroscopic tools to probe catalytic materials under working conditions.Focus application areas for this work include more energy or carbon efficient processes, alternative non fossil feedstocks such as biomass waste to useful chemicals (either by novel synthetic steps or gasification and Fischer-Tropsch), and sustainable catalyst technologies such as for preventing waste at source (oxidation or valorisation of organics in produced waters or prevention of methane emissions in the dairy industry).I'm also open to new ideas and challenges though, so I've got involved in research using our catalysis and characterisation skillbase to deal with everything from lunar atmospheres to sorbents for water treatment.
