An extension of my graduate study work targeting energy homeostasis/regulation in the human body. Highlights from my experiences here include:• Optimized an in vitro cell culture assay, screened 730,000 small molecule compounds, and identified 10 lead compounds in an ongoing collaborative project with a private non-profit research center which lead to several new technology patents• Designed and implemented a high-sensitivity fluorescence-based enzymatic assay used to screen 12.9 million compounds which identified 50 lead compounds• Chemically modified compounds and their formulations to make them biologically compatible • Published 1 peer-reviewed publication and co-authored a scientific review • Synthesized numerous peptides, small molecules, and glycoside conjugates

My scientific training at the University of Minnesota has focused on the identification and development of novel therapeutics targeting key appetite-regulating GPCRs in the brain and CNS. I discovered, biologically characterized, and aided in the patenting process of a potential weight loss therapeutic targeting hunger and satiety. Highlights of my experiences here include:• Presented and discussed my research at 5 regional and 3 international conferences• Trained technicians and graduate students in biological tissue culture and chemical synthesis• Authored or co-authored 4 manuscripts in top-tier chemical biology journals• Mentored an undergraduate student as part of summer research experience for undergraduatesTechnical skills developed include: organic chemistry with a focus on solid phase synthesis, peptide/peptidomimetic synthesis, HPLC purification, and mass spec analysis (ESI/MS, MALDI/TOF, LC/MS/MS). Additional skills I developed include bioassay development/optimization, cell culture maintenance with experience in molecular biology (cloning, DNA isolation, plasmid construction, and receptor expression), and high throughput screening.

Provided patient-centered care to developmentally disabled adolescents and adults. Organized one-on-one activities and community-based outings for clients. Assisted with activities of daily living as well as therapies including physical and occupational therapy. Created a positive and safe atmosphere for residents.

Was granted the competitive, annual Kell Container Corporation Scholarship for Student-Faculty Collaborative Research as a result of a scientific proposal. Earned a full-ride scholarship in addition to grants for research under Dr Jim Boulter. This project resulted in the publication of a first-author paper in the Journal of Chemical Physics.
