Research Assistant to Dr. Carolyn Wilshire in the School of Psychology.Our question: How do brain tumours affect “frontal” cognitive abilities?Why do we care? Some people who have been diagnosed with a brain tumour experience difficulties “thinking straight”. For example, they may have trouble solving complex problems, making plans and carrying them out, or making everyday decisions. The kinds of abilities are commonly associated with the brain’s frontal lobes.Current clinical neuropsychological assessment tools do not assess these kinds of skills in much detail. The aim of this project is to develop better, more sensitive tools to assess these kinds of problems and give them to people with brain tumours, and also to healthy control participants.Ultimately, this research may help to improve the way we assess cognitive function in tumour patients, and in other neurological conditions that may impact on these types of skills. It may also shed light on how the frontal lobes of the brain support some of our most sophisticated human mental abilities.
