About Sophia Lloyd

I have a passion for science and writing, and am very happy that I am able to combine the two in my work.I believe that making new breakthroughs in science and technology accessible is essential in this rapidly changing world, where tech has become the backbone of modern life.I love learning new ideas and spending time with people who are passionate about their work. That energy is infectious, and I find that my best writing work comes from interaction with people who believe strongly in their research. My time as a theoretical physics researcher taught me how to look deeply into a problem or issue and consider it from different sides, which helps me when developing stories. It also taught me, through teaching, presenting at conferences and discussing with friends, how to convey complex scientific ideas to different groups.I have an excellent eye for detail and am used to working well under pressure and in a team. I am self-motivated, and really enjoy taking the time to delve into a new topic or learn a new skill. My ambition is to never stop learning new things!

Topics included preliminary research into vortex-plasmon interactions in simple metallic structures, and searching for vortex solutions to the Dirac-Volkov equation using Bessel laser fields. In addition, the possibility of transfer of angular momentum transfer between atomic matter evanescent waves carrying transverse spin angular momentum was investigated. Initial results showed that transfer is possible, with transitions strength dependent on the degree of transverse polarisation, and atom position within the evanescent wave field. Show less

YuanTheoretical investigation into recently theorised and experimentally realised electron vortices. The main result of this work was the derivation of the selection rules of the interaction between the electron vortex and atomic matter. This showed that orbital angular momentum exchange is possible in such an interaction, unlike with optical vortices. Numerical modelling of the analytical theory shows the spatial dependence of the interaction, and demonstrates the limits of vortex-based magnetic characterisation using electron energy loss spectroscopy. Additional key topics included characterization of the electron vortex solutions, numerical modelling of holographic diffraction to produce vortex beams, derivation of electric and magnetic fields of the electron vortex, and spin-orbit interaction within the vortex. Both analytic and numerical techniques have been applied. This work was collaborative with experimental work at the University of York, to inform and guide both theoretical and experimental aspects.
