Profile bio

About Soutrik Mukherjee

I’m currently deep in the trenches of a Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mechanics (MEAM) at the University of Pennsylvania, where I attempt to keep up with coursework while daydreaming about building the next Iron Man suit. I managed to graduate first in my class with a B.Tech degree from NIT Rourkela, which really means I spent a lot of time cramming and drinking an unhealthy amount of coffee.I also dabbled in the startup world, where I founded a company dedicated to structural optimization through machine learning. Basically, I taught computers to play a very nerdy version of Tetris with building materials. During my stint as a Data Analyst Intern at Carrier Global, I developed data visualization tools that made solar power plants run so efficiently that they almost started producing sunshine themselves. My research projects? Oh, they’re the kind that would make a Marvel scientist nod in approval. I’ve worked on drone design and fish-descaler systems – because who doesn’t love drones and smooth-scaled fish? I’ve even published papers on these in prestigious journals. They’re bedtime reading material for anyone suffering from insomnia.I’m all about integrating automation, AI, and machine learning into engineering solutions. If there’s a way to make machines do the work while I take a nap, I’m on it. My ultimate goal is to tackle the kind of engineering problems that make people go, “Whoa, that’s some Tony Stark-level stuff right there!” and contribute to advancements in mechanical and aerospace industries, all while maintaining my sense of humor. Because let’s face it, if you’re not laughing, you’re probably crying over your latest simulation that just crashed.

Listed skills include Engineering Simulation, Microsoft Office, Design Engineering, Microsoft Word, and 13 others.

Researcher

Topology Optimizer (Early Stage Start-Up)

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States

After receiving a suggestion from my academic advisor, we attempted to launch a startup. Unfortunately, due to restrictions related to being an international student, the venture didn’t succeed. However, we were able to accomplish several key milestones along the way:1) Thesis: Optimized material distribution using Python and CAD tools.2) Material Efficiency: Achieved a 20% reduction in material usage and a 15% increase in durability.3) Tools and Techniques: Utilized topology optimization with Solidworks and Altair OptiStruct, improving design efficiency by 15%.4) Performance Enhancement: Maximized stiffness-to-weight ratio, leading to a 10% increase in product durability.5) Commercialization: Led commercialization efforts, resulting in a report filing and increasing market viability by 25% at the Venture Lab of the University of Pennsylvania.

Sep 2022 - Jan 2024

Srf(Summer Research Fellow) 2021

Bengaluru, Karnataka, India

1) Fellowship: Awarded an Indian Government Paid Fellowship at the Indian Academy of Sciences (IASc), Bangalore.2) Historical Context: IASc was founded in 1934 by Sir C V Raman to promote scientific progress.3) Project: Worked on the “Keyhole Laser Welding Algorithm,” focusing on flow characterization, heat transfer, and fluid dynamics in laser welding.4) Presentation: Presented the research to a panel of professors and scientists at the Summer Fellowship Conference of IASc.5) Competitive Selection: Selected from a vast pool of applicants for the prestigious fellowship.

Sep 2021 - Nov 2021

Mechanical Engineer

Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, India

1) Research Focus: Structural analysis of an experimental setup involving bouncing/walking droplets on a vibrating bath.2) Quantum Analogy: Explored analogies with the pilot wave theory, an early interpretation of quantum mechanics.3) Multi-DOF System: Analyzed the response of multi-degree-of-freedom systems under damped conditions.4) Fluid Dynamics: Modeled the flow of fluid and its relation to the excitation applied to the vibrating bowl.5) Modal Analysis: Conducted modal analysis to find eigenvalues (natural frequency matrix) and eigenvectors (mode shapes) of the structure.6) Experimental Comparison: Matched analytical results with experimental observations.7) Mentorship: Worked under the guidance of Dr. Bishakh Bhattacharya (HAL Chair Professor, IIT Kanpur).8) Inspiration: The experience motivated the pursuit of rigorous engineering studies.

Apr 2021 - Aug 2021

Mechanical Engineer

Kerala, India

1) Numerical Simulation: Conducted a simulation of 3-dimensional laminar incompressible flow and heat transfer in lobed-toroidal flow passages.2) Focus: Analyzed the enhancement of heat transfer.3) Applications: Relevant to high-velocity material movement within a Newtonian scale.4) Engineering Use: Applied in designing the shape of four-layered propulsion systems.
