Research focuses on relationships among wildland conservation, natural resource use, regional economic development, and environmental quality. Specific topics: included structure and performance of the forest products industry; economic development opportunities for traditionally resource-dependent communities; market and non-market value of conserved wildlands; ecosystem service modeling, valuation and mapping; and federal and state tax and regulatory policy affecting forest land management and disposition.

Designed and implemented organizational strategic plan and comprehensive fundraising system, represented NorthWoods Stewardship Center to a range of constituent groups, developed partnerships and alliances with other organizations, and built individual and group capacity among the organization’s nine full-time professional staff and 14-member Board of Directors.

Worked with scientific, legal and other professionals from a range of government and non-government organizations to integrate economic and environmental policy considerations. Policy areas included: relationships between environmental protection and trade, agricultural and energy policies; economic instruments for environmental protection; environmental risk management; and global atmospheric change.

Designed and conducted research in natural resource and environmental economics. Master’s research yielded a comprehensive evaluation of agricultural chemical application and associated water quality risk in the Chesapeake Bay region of Virginia. Doctoral research established the positive relationship between public land protection and private land values and explored solutions capable of tapping that relationship to provide economic incentives for further land conservation. Also supported the New Environmentalism Roundtable, an effort to introduce economic policy tools to the Commonwealth of Virginia’s environmental protection efforts.
