About Sean Mahaffey
As a Site Reliability Engineer at IBM, I leveraged my technical and leadership skills to deliver high-quality cloud applications. I'm a big proponent of the "automation first" mindset; once steps are codified in automated code, no two people can ever make the same mistake again. That same philosophy can be applied to create self-healing systems and resilient processes and I love being given the freedom to make those happen. My passion about automation can be infectious and I think my whole team was inspired to really take up the mantle of continuous improvement to make our applications the best they could be.Along my journey, I've created more automation scripts than I can count, bash-based APM checks for server patching, and even a fully-fledged deployment UI before automation tools became common place. I conceived the idea and led my team down the path of their Agile journey where we became IBM Sterling's first Agile squad and had a lot of fun getting things figured out and getting things done. I recreated the Change Management Policy for the business from scratch and got a table of all the executives to give it the thumbs up. Once we picked them up, I got to work on the new stuff too, Kubernetes (OpenShift), Ansible, Chef, ArgoCD, the list goes on. Basically everything we needed to make our environment IaC-friendly. Working for IBM had its ups and downs, but what most people saw as the downs were my specialty. I was at my best when in the thick of a production incident and loved to dig around and figure out what threw a wrench in our application and how fix it. I guess that's why I got so involved in SRE, helping found the IBM SRE guild and becoming a key member of the weekly RCA calls where we had blameless post-mortem and shared the recent production incidents to boost learning.

Senior Site Reliability Engineer
Full Stack Developer Technical Lead/Site Reliability Engineer
Throughout my career at IBM, I have progressed from a Level 1 Support Technician into my current role where I own and orchestrated the design, launch, and maintenance of 20+ custom Cloud applications. As a servant leader, I coordinate sprints, retrospective meetings, and daily stand-ups to ensure my team produces high quality deliverables. To ensure that work gets done efficiently, I maintain close contact with product owners and cross-functional teams to refine agendas, execute changes, and implement tools to automate software features. ⦁ Played pivotal role in driving Kubernetes to OpenShift platform migration with aggressive deadline. Guided team in evaluating, reengineering, and updating deployment manifest, task YAMLs, and template files to align with OpenShift. ⦁ Reduced security vulnerabilities by 1K+ in environment by employing strong time management and sense of urgency to relocate applications before expiration of security violations. ⦁ Slashed call outs by 98% from 10+ to 0.14 per day and troubleshooting response times with installation and upgrade of alerting and monitoring system. ⦁ Built alerting system from ground up and fine-tuned monitoring function to detect metrics and decrease false positives. Wrote shell script that generated basic alerts dynamically and imported data to Zabbix directly.
Devops Team Lead/Advisory Software Engineer
Moving into this role gave me the opportunity to strengthen my people leadership and project management skills by serving as the primary contributor on two key initiatives. Recognized by the Senior Management team, I was tapped to transform the Change and Incident Management SOP and build identical Cloud platforms for the EDI divisions in US and Europe. Liaised with product owners on continual application improvements. By championing Agile and liaising with product owners, I was able to drive more effective resource utilization and faster development of new features. ⦁ Revised SOP and condensed material by 75% to enhance readability and maintainability while retaining original meaning and message. ⦁ Cut lead time for low-risk changes by over 99% and number of meetings by > 80%. Realized 70% drop in unauthorized modifications and changes requiring variance.⦁ Became founding member of global IBM SRE guild by initiating collaboration with senior leaders to brainstorm solutions that minimized future occurrence of production incidents. ⦁ New script lowered full deployment from one hour to less than 5 minutes from beginning to end. Roll out of minor changes such as jar updates for security to 40+ applications took effect in < 60 minutes across ecosystem. ⦁ Single-handedly accomplished over 80% of AppOps project tasks related to expansion of IBM prominence in European marketplace which accounts for 32% of current traffic.
Level 3 Support/Devops/Advisory Software Engineer
Based on my technical expertise and initiative, I was promoted to the top tier in less than 12 months. As the final line of defense, I conducted research and rewrite code as needed to resolve tickets escalated from the Level 2 Support team. As a key player on the team, I coordinated application deployments and troubleshot ongoing production issues for the AppOps business component. ⦁ Personally handled over 65% of tickets escalated to team based on deep knowledge and familiarity with environment from front to back.⦁ Decreased time of DevOps patching by 85% with single shell script that gave team members ability to stop, start, and verify status of applications.⦁ Displayed leadership ability by taking charge of training new DevOps team members on job duties and best practices. ⦁ Evolved into subject matter expert (SME) on SQL related tasks. Collected and curated data integral to system migrations and design of personalized reports for customers.
Level 2 Support/Implementations
The transition from a contractor to a permanent employee at IBM was seamless. I was able to gain advanced domain knowledge and problem-solving skills by moving up to the next level. As a mentor and SME, I advised my team members on setup configurations and a broad range of internal system interconnectivity issues.⦁ Diagnosed issues with complex communications and data flows. Resolved cases transferred by Level 1 technicians and performed end-to-end implementations for clients.⦁ Consistently attained highest customer satisfaction ratings and fastest average turnaround time through attention to detail and improvement of existing processes.⦁ Removed over 70% of manual data entry tasks that reduced human error and processing time drastically with automation of core business procedures.
