Providing high-level knowledge, experience, and administrative leadership in organizational ethics and medical ethics to two international professional medical organizations, the American Thoracic Society (ATS: https://www.thoracic.org/) and American Society of Nephrology (ASN: https://www.asn-online.org/). ATS represents 16,000 physicians, nurses, and scientists active in pulmonary medicine, critical care, and sleep medicine. The ASN represents 21,000 kidney health professionals working to help people with kidney diseases and their families. I've served the ATS since 1998. The ASN contracted with the ATS for my services (.5 FTE) effective April 2022.Responsibilities include:-- development of policies and adjudication on organizational and member conflicts of interests and other professionalism issues, affecting organizational governance, clinical practice guidelines, medical journal operations, and continuing medical education. -- staffing oversight committees and society initiatives to address a wide range of biomedical ethics issues relevant to each society and their respective domains of pulmonary and critical care medicine and science and nephrology medicine and science.Career accomplishments include:-- Leadership roles in non-profit association management at international, national and regional levels, including twenty+ years at international and national headquarters, and ten at state-level headquarters including as CEO.-- Legislative and regulatory advocacy at federal and state levels, including appointment to state and federal agency advisory committees of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, National Institutes of Health (National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute), the Governor of Oregon, and the Mayor of the District of Columbia. Co-led a successful state initiative campaign to increase tobacco excise taxes allocated to healthcare and prevention.-- Compliance and accreditation: have directed organizational and member compliance with national standards and accreditor requirements, including of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education, Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, the American Medical Association, and the Council of Medical Specialty Societies. -- Program development and publications: authored or co-authored peer-reviewed journal articles and educational materials; led national health education campaigns and programs. -- International Relations: lead staff for collaborative multi-nation projects and participated in meetings and conferences in Europe, Latin America and Asia.
